Ukraine’s Zelenskiy urges Russians to ‘go home’

Image
STORY: Ukraine’s assault comes after weeks of a stalemate in a war that has killed thousands, displaced millions, destroyed cities and caused a global energy and food crisis amid unprecedented economic sanctions. It has also fueled worries of a radiation disaster being triggered by shelling near the south Ukraine Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant. Zelenskiy, in his nightly address late on Monday, vowed that Ukrainian troops would chase the Russian army “to the border”. “If they want to survive – it’s time for the Russian military to run away. Go home,” he said. “Ukraine is taking back its own,” Zelenskiy said. Hurt in an accident? Aftermath of FL primary: One candidate narrowly wins after recounts; another won’t accept defeat

Image
In the recent primary elections, two GOP races in Central Florida were neck and neck, with one candidate pulling off a narrow win in the state House after recounts and another refusing to concede a Congressional race. State Rep. Webster Barnaby, known for filing a Texas-style six-week abortion ban that died in the Florida Legislature, defeated his colleague, state Rep. Elizabeth Fetterhoff, after the Volusia County Supervisor of Elections conducted a machine recount for that district. Barnaby barely won the race by 31 votes over Fetterhoff, according to data from the Florida Division of Elections and the Volusia County Supervisor of Elections office. Overall, he had received about 50.1 percent of the vote, while Fetterhoff received 49.9 percent. Barnaby will face unopposed Democrat Rick Karl, former director of the Daytona Beach International Airport, in the November elections. “I am honored to have the support of so many and look forward to representing all of Western Vol...

How the ‘Queen of Canada’ is making inroads into the US, Australia and beyond

Image
Romana Didulo is a Canadian conspiracy theorist who falsely asserts she is the queen and ruler of Canada. On her instructions, some of her disciples recently attempted to arrest police officers in southern Ontario. The plan was then to turn the police over to the military to be tried as war criminals. If convicted of crimes against humanity, the police officers would be executed, according to Didulo. Instead, her followers were arrested and charged with assaulting police officers. Nonetheless, Didulo is making strides in replicating her movement in the United States and beyond. This expansion began in July 2022. As a behavioral scientist and researcher of what’s known as the sovereign citizenship movement, I have been monitoring Didulo and how she’s expanding her reach. In the United States, the “Kingdom of America” is now being led by “His Highness King David J Carlson” and his wife “Her Highness Lady Sarah MG Carlson.” Th...

Patients from Idaho, Texas, elsewhere seek abortion care in Oregon

Image
Abortion providers in Oregon have seen a recent rise in demand for abortions from women from states that have adopted bans or are in the process of doing so, officials said at a news conference last week. “We are seeing people from almost every red state in the country right now – Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, Idaho, any state that has a ban, we’re seeing patients,” said Anne Udall, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette. Planned Parenthood accounts for three-quarters of the abortions in Oregon, according to company officials. Its clinic in Bend has seen stepped-up demand in part because it’s one of the only options now for many women in Idaho and eastern Oregon seeking abortions. Last week, a woman took a $1,200 taxi ride from Boise to the Bend clinic for an abortion, Udall said at the news conference. “Let me reassure you, she will be reimbursed,” Udall said. “There are a lot of funds out there to help people who are seeking abortion care.” In Februa...

Crist vs. Fried: Primary candidates held a ‘conversation’ but much was retreaded territory

Image
The two major gubernatorial primary candidates Wednesday evening did little to move the needle on some of the most significant political issues related to their platforms, from the economy, education reforms and assault weapon bans. But both Democratic candidates, U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist and Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, had some differences. One of them was that Crist didn’t reference Fried’s name at any time in the half-hour conversation with a panel of top journalists in Florida. That likely means that he has moved on to campaign against the Republican opponent, Gov. Ron DeSantis. Fried did mention Crist in her conversation with the panel, particularly about abortion rights. Fried said that Crist had earlier been considered “pro-life.” She also said Crist, when he was a Republican governor, appointed  “the most extremist anti-choice Supreme Court justices,” at that time. But Crist, from Pinellas County, said he vetoed legislation that would have required women to...

OnlyFans Model Makes First Appearance on Murder Charge After Extradition from Hawaii – NBC 6 South Florida

Image
OnlyFans model Courtney Clenney, who’s charged with second-degree murder in the killing of boyfriend Christian Obumseli inside the couple’s luxury Edgewater apartment earlier this year, made her first appearance before a Miami-Dade County judge on Saturday. Clenney was arrested in Hawaii earlier this month, and was booked into the Miami-Dade County jail on Friday after being extradited. While in court Saturday, Clenney’s attorney, Frank Prieto, asked Miami-Dade bond court Judge Jacqueline Woodward to reevaluate whether probable cause exists for the arrest warrant. Prieto argued probable cause does not exist for second-degree murder, but perhaps exists for a manslaughter charge. “There’s several misstatements indicating the government cherrypicked certain text messages,” said Prieto. “I have the full text message where they tried to indicate that the Mom was somehow insinuating to say self-defense, which is not true. The detective also indicated there...

Roger Waters of Pink Floyd performs in Orlando

Image
Roger Waters, the outspoken co-founder and singer-songwriter of Pink Floyd, came to Orlando delivering powerful political commentary through his music and showmanship, along with a message: “This Is Not a Drill.” At least that’s the name of the tour, which appeared at Orlando’s Amway Center Thursday night. The show was postponed for nearly two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and there’s a suggestion, perhaps a bit tongue-in-cheek, that Waters might be winding down. “It could be his last hurrah,” said Waters, 78, in a statement announcing the show, speaking in the third person. “Wow! My first farewell tour! Don’t miss it.” Roger Waters provides a disclaimer for fans before his show at Amway Center in Orlando on his “This Is Not a Drill” tour on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2022. (Patrick Connolly/Orlando Sentinel) Heading into the arena, many fans undoubtedly knew what they were getting themselves into. Ever since the blockbuster ...
