Ian leaves Southwest Florida homes with mold

Image
FORT MYERS Mold and mildew have taken thousands of homes across Southwest Florida. It’s a nightmare that many, including Nancy George, can’t seem to wake up from. “It gets into everything,” she said. “It’s in the walls, it’s in the floors, and it could be in the ceilings because most of them have been closed up for so long.” The place Nancy once called home is now covered in mold, past the point of repair. Her boyfriend’s house down the street is also covered in mold. “Mold is a huge problem here, for everybody,” Nancy said. “Almost all of these homes are gone because of the mold.” For now, Nancy is living in a camper with her boyfriend outside his home. They are both still waiting for FEMA disaster assistance money. “I’m at the mercy of the Christian companies now to see if they will come and help me remove stuff,” Nancy said. It’s a tough situation for Nancy as she deals with...

Trending up Florida’s graduation rate is a slight notch higher than it was prior to the pandemic, according to data from the Florida Department of Education. DOE reported this week that the overall graduation rate for the 2021-22 school year was 87.3%, or 0.4% higher than the 2018-19 school year. That’s a lower rate than it was the past two years, but testing rules were waived during the COVID-19 pandemic. State officials said that comparing this year’s rate to the last year prior to the pandemic is a more “apples to apples comparison.” Florida is making back the education regression from the pandemic. Florida took a different approach than many other states during the pandemic and opened all schools up for in-person instruction in the fall of 2021, although remote teaching was allowed to continue at first. “While many around the nation were lowering expectations and keeping at-risk students at a distance from their teachers and needed educational supports...

Florida leaders give more love to family trusts of the super-rich—Orlando Sentinel

Image
TALLAHASSEE — Florida has long been a tax haven, but new trust laws enacted over the past three years friendly to the heirs of the Walmart fortune and other families will make the state even more accommodating to the uber-rich looking to hide wealth and avoid taxes for generations to come. Such trusts are crucial to keeping trillions of dollars out of the federal treasury, enough to pay down a big chunk of the national debt or spend on education, social services or other government programs. The three new laws give Florida a more competitive edge in the trust and estate management business, and protect the personal information of wealthy families, bill sponsors said. They also make it harder to scrutinize the activities of family trusts to know how much property and money are being transferred, a lack of transparency that can hide assets. Opponents, including the First Amendment Foundation and real estate and trust lawyers, said they created an elite, secret court system wher...
