Formula 1 confirms date for the Miami GP in May 2022
Formula 1 has confirmed that the first Miami Grand Prix will be held in early May 2022, claiming that tickets are in high demand even though they haven’t gone on sale yet.
Miami will join the F1 schedule for the next season but will be separated from the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, which has a starting slot in late October. While the Miami project encountered some resistance prior to its approval, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali noted that there was a lot of interest in tickets going on sale after the final race date was announced.
“We’re not even halfway through 2021, but the plans for 2022 have been going on for some time,” said Domenicali. “The demand for venues for the 2022 calendar is great. We hope to announce the preliminary calendar in September / October.
“We can confirm that the eagerly anticipated Miami Grand Prix will take place in the first half of May and that the demand for tickets is high, although sales have not yet officially started. We are also looking forward to moving to St. Petersburg for the Russian Grand Prix in 2023. “

The talk of the 2022 calendar is in the last races in the midst of large crowds, but also an ongoing experiment with a sprint qualification format that will also be seen next month in Monza and later this year, for the time being, in Brazil. However, Domenicali believes the other weekend format is likely to be used for established races rather than newcomers like Miami.
“The idea was to offer something different to make sure we can offer something new to all stakeholders in Formula 1,” said Domenicali. “We said we wanted to do three tests. One was held at Silverstone, the other at Monza, and the other at the end of the season in Brazil.
“At the end of this full test, we’ll have a plan to see what the next step is. What we can say is that the feedback we received from the drivers, teams and media after Silverstone has been very positive. And also from the promoter, because we had something every day – the people who came out on the track on Friday had the first qualifying – so the result of the first event was dramatically positive.
“That’s great because it got attention and interest and TV and partners too, so we saw a positive financial impact. So if I may say it has shown very, very positive signs.

“We want to respect what we said. We’ll have a full debrief during the season. We have a plan for the future – of course we will continue to develop it. We are refining some of the comments received. What I can say is that if we go in this direction in the future – as I think we should – it won’t be the case in every race.
“We have ideas for creating a special format for certain historic Grand Prix and certain special awards that we would like to offer to complement the already incredible Formula 1 platform. So very, very positive comments after the first exercise, and (we are) ready to work out a proposal at the end of the three events that can hopefully bring home a big step in sporting terms too. “
