Pediatricians in southwest Florida beg parents to mask the students

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. – Pediatricians from the Southwest Florida community joined NCH pediatricians over the weekend begging parents to send their children to school in masks as COVID cases in local pediatric patients hit numbers that doctors still do have never been seen before.

According to the NCH, the younger population is 2.5 times more likely to be affected by the delta variant of the coronavirus than older adults. The pediatricians are warning the community about what they will experience early in school and some parents are wondering how to keep their children safe in the classroom.

Doctors ask students to dress up when they go back to school. In addition, the doctors strongly recommend that parents have their children vaccinated against COVID from the age of 12.

“In the summer months of June we only saw about 10 patients a week with COVID,” said Dr. Pia Myers, Director of the Pediatric Emergency Department at NCH. “At the end of July we saw that this number had increased dramatically …[and] we start seeing more than 10 patients with COVID every day. It’s incredibly contagious and our children get sick. ”

For information on how to get free masks for you and your children, and to schedule an appointment for your family’s free COVID vaccine, visit NaplesInUnity.com or drop by the clinic. Walk-ins are also accepted at 2450 Goodlette-Frank Road in Naples.
