Tropical Storm Fred Forms; Southwest Florida in the cone

WINK NEWS

Tropical storm Fred formed south of Puerto Rico. At 11:00 PM on Tuesday, Fred has winds of 40 mph and is moving into the WNW at 27 mph.

Fred will move west-northwest through the NE Caribbean. From Thursday to Friday it will happen north of Cuba and into the southern Bahamas.

By this weekend, Fred is expected to pass south of Florida through the Straits and Keys, or possibly even land in South Florida as Tropical Storm Fred.

Then the greatest potential impact is possible here in southwest Florida.

The good news is that before Fred can potentially hit the SWFL, he will have to overcome many obstacles, including the potential disruption caused by the mountainous terrain of Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, and Cuba, along with a dose of dry air and wind shear.

However, if Fred manages to pass north of the islands and bypass the mountainous terrain, we could see a stronger storm than currently forecast considering the water temperatures are very warm, especially in the Bahamas and along the Florida coast.

BOTTOM LINE: Tropical Storm Fred formed in the Caribbean. Fred could be affecting the WINK field of view this weekend but has a lot of obstacles before coming the closest this weekend.

With potential effects still taking a few days to set in, it is too early to worry about the details. But at least higher chances of rain and breezy conditions could affect your plans this weekend.
