Gov. DeSantis pulls one road from the Everglades, but OKs putting in another

Image
“Submitted for your approval …” Man, I always loved that old TV show “The Twilight Zone.” First came the chilling theme music: Doo-doo-doo-dooo … Then Rod Serling would warn you that you’re entering “another dimension — a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You’re moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You’ve just crossed over into the Twilight Zone.” Then you’d be immersed in a twisted tale awash in irony and amazement, where things were never what they seemed. So many episodes produced memorable images and quotes, like “My name is Talky Tina!” and “It’s a cookbook!” Sometimes living in Florida gives off that vibe as well. We are, after all, a land of shadow and substance, a dimension of sight and of mind. A prime example happened just this past week. First, look at this Tallahassee press release from Aug. 3: “Today, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the completion of the Old Tamiami Trail Roadbed Removal Project, wh

Tampa, New England is excited as Brady prepares to return

Image
FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts (AP) – It’s been 633 days since Tom Brady played an NFL game in New England. He trudged off the field on January 4, 2020 after a playoff loss to the Tennessee Titans, a rare loser at the place where he helped hoist six Super Bowl championship banners. However, remnants of his 20-year career with the Patriots remain throughout Foxborough. Brady’s # 12 Patriots jerseys can still be seen in the stands on match days at Gillette Stadium. Boston Market viewership surpassed Tampa for the Bucs’ Super Bowl win last season, and New England fans continue to flock to bars to watch Brady’s games for the first three weeks of this season. With Brady’s new home in Tampa just as ruthless towards the player who earned him a championship in his first year, it has sparked a tug-of-war between fan bases as he seeks to return to the place where his career began. “As a fan, I think this is one of the greatest moments in Boston sports history,” said Jermaine Wiggins, a c

FL moms have gotten expanded Medicaid coverage following childbirth, but not many people knew it

Image
A major initiative pushed by Florida House Speaker Chris Sprowls to expand Medicaid coverage for women and babies has been happening for more than a year — a surprise to lawmakers who were getting antsy about the launch of the new program for postpartum moms. Sprowls pushed to expand Medicaid coverage for mothers and babies, from 60 days to a full year following childbirth. The 2021 Legislature approved the program, and Florida is awaiting federal approval to get the effort going. But with the nation under a public health emergency during the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government has allowed states to expand the Medicaid coverage well beyond the original 60 days following childbirth. In fact, the effort began as early as March 2020 for those women, health policy experts told the Florida Phoenix. Lawmakers probably were unaware of the federal law that grants continued Medicaid coverage to pregnant women, said Anne Swerlick, senior policy analyst at the Florida Policy Ins

Lula Mayor Preview: Jim Grier vs. Joe Thomas

Image
Joe Thomas has lived in Lula with his wife Patti for 32 years. Patti qualified to run for the second seat on the city council, but told the Times on Wednesday, September 29, that she was stepping back from the race in full support of her husband’s candidacy for mayor. Above all, Joe Thomas emphasized the need for more transparency and communication on the part of the city. “I started walking when I realized that the city council and the mayor here are not informing people the way they should,” said Thomas. He said the city needs to make better use of its website and try different ways to keep people informed, such as a regular email newsletter. Thomas currently works as a rural freight forwarder for the US Post Office. He and his wife previously ran a florist in Lula and a commercial printer in Oakwood and Doraville for 28 years. Thomas wants the city to have its own police department, he said, although it’s unclear whether the city can afford it anytime soon. Thomas sai

The Miami Hurricanes have a lot to prove in the ACC opening game against Virginia

Image
CORAL GABLES – Manny Diaz did the only thing he could after Miami beat an overwhelmed opponent with 10 touchdowns on Saturday, making the game more physical. But he also threw in a dose of reality. “A game from last weekend doesn’t fix everything.” Especially this game. The destruction of FBS member Central Connecticut State proved nothing. Miami (2-2) is still 0-2 against the only Power 5 opponents (Alabama and Michigan State) on its game plan, which were surpassed with 82-30 points. If Diaz really wants people to believe the Hurricanes are moving forward, it has to start Thursday at home against Virginia (2-2) in their ACC opener, with or without D’Eriq King, UM’s quarterback, whose status is for Thursday is unknown after he missed the CCSU game due to a right shoulder injury. Alachua County Legislative Delegation Hearing hears 2022 meeting requests from politicians and voters

Image
For Sabrina Davis, the Alachua County Legislative Assembly was more than a hearing for local city and county governments to seek funding. Davis urged the delegation to consider pending laws in January that would increase the number of people who can file lawsuits against hospitals for medical homicide and to keep an eye on their case. “My case is real,” she said, holding back tears. “My case is written in black and white.” Davis was one of 18 north central Florida residents and leaders who spoke at the hearing on Monday. The delegation consisting of Sen. Keith Perry and Reps. Chuck Clemons, Chuck Brannan, and Yvonne Hayes Hinson also heard from local city and county officials asking for funding and assistance. Gainesville Mayor Lauren Poe asked for additional assistance with the pandemic, continued support for the police breaker program, and funding to keep the city streets, especially around the university, safer. Newberry Mayor Jordan Marlowe asked for funds to be rais

The U.S. government’s treatment of Haitian asylum seekers reeks of hypocrisy

After horrific photos emerged of men falling from airplanes and babies in great peril at the Kabul Airport weeks ago, I noticed a dramatic uptick in my various news feeds of the phrase “moral obligation.” Across all mediums, I heard righteous call for the United States and nations around the globe to remember promises made as part of the U.N.’s Refugee Convention  to receive people fleeing persecution. On one hand, it was wonderful to see people articulating the correct moral duty we owe to Afghan refugees. On the other hand, I was filled with sadness to know that we do not extend the same humanity to people on the United States border. Nowhere has that lack of humanity been more evident than the Border Patrol’s violent response to Haitians entering the United States. Pictures emerged days ago of agents on horseback  charging Black migrants as they attempted to cross the river near Texas. The abject horror of these photos and their historical implication should make anyone si

COVID-19 cases continue to decline in Hall County Schools

Image
COVID-19 cases in the Hall County School District are down 70% from their peak in early September, and the number of schools requiring masks is now zero, Superintendent Will Schofield said in a video update last Friday. According to information on the district’s website, there are 93 confirmed cases and 103 quarantines as of Monday, September 27. “We will continue to hope that the trends will continue,” said Schofield. “I want to thank our supervisors, I want to thank all of our schools for the containment measures they continue to take to prevent the spread.” In early September, the district reported about 450 confirmed cases, Schofield said in an interview, doubling its previous case record during this delta wave. The previous record was set in December 2020 with 198. A few weeks ago, a dozen schools requested masks to help curb the spread of COVID-19, despite the district as a whole maintaining its policy of optional masks. “Again, I’m not interested in a mask debate,”

Gainesville City Leaders Make A Push To Help Black Families Hold Onto Their Property

Image
In late 2019, Gainesville resident Dale Harris received a phone call from a distant relative who said that she and her 98-year-old father are part-owners of a 120-acre plot of land an hour’s drive outside Tallahassee. She was excited by the news. “It was really unbelievable,” Harris said. But she also learned that using the land — even retaining it — would be a challenge because, under the law, it was considered “heirs’ property.” Heirs’ property commonly occurs when a deceased relative dies without leaving a will or leaves land to multiple heirs.  According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, heirs’ property is “the leading cause of Black involuntary land loss.” African Americans, who once owned 15 million acres , lost up to 90 % of their land from 1910-2007.  In Florida, a growing number of individuals and groups — including lawyers, state legislators, county commissioners and community organizers — have been working to help families affected by heirs’ property
