Notice is hereby given that the proposed ordinances whose titles appear below will be considered for First Reading on the 5th day of May, 2022, at a City Commission meeting and if passed on First Reading will be considered for Second Reading on the 19th day of May , 2022. The meeting for First Reading begins at 10:00 am and the ordinances will be read as soon thereafter as may be heard. The meeting for Second Reading begins at 10:00 am and the ordinances will be read as soon thereafter as may be heard. The meeting is scheduled to be held in the City Hall Auditorium, on the first floor of City Hall, 200 East University Avenue, Gainesville, Florida. A copy of said ordinances may be inspected by any member of the public at the office of the City Clerk on the first floor of City Hall during regular business hours located at 200 East University Avenue, Gainesville, Florida. An ordinance of the City of Gainesville, Florida, amending Article III titled Solid Waste of Chapter 27 of the Code of Ordinances by revising definitions; adding requirements for commercial generators of solid waste, commercially-collected residential property, and recovered material registrants; requiring commercially-collected properties of a certain size to have a lease transition plan; requiring retail prescription drug distributors to provide take back programs for prescription drugs; requiring commercial establishments to have additional recycling containers; requiring property owners to provide commercial tenants with adequate space for solid waste and recycling; creating a new division regulating single-use plastic and polystyrene products; providing for civil citations, general penalties in section 1-9, injunctive relief, and code enforcement; providing directions to the coder; providing a severability clause; providing a repairing clause; and providing an effective date and an enforcement date.

Democratic governors press U.S. Senate to act on voting rights legislation

WASHINGTON — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and 16 other Democratic governors are urging the U.S. Senate to pass two bills that aim to protect voting rights. Both measures need 60 votes to advance under Senate rules but have been stalled by Republican opposition in the evenly divided Senate. “Without decisive action by the federal government this year to protect voters’ access to the ballot and ensure the integrity and transparency of our elections, the voices of Americans across the country, especially Americans of color, will be suppressed,” the governors wrote in a Monday  letter  to U.S. Senate leadership. U.S. House GOP would make it easier for feds to give public lands away to states

U.S. House Republicans included in the new rules for the chamber they passed this month a provision meant to make it easier for Congress to give away public lands. The provision is a fairly technical piece of the 55-page  rules package . It affects internal House accounting and requires that anytime Congress were to give any federal lands to a state, municipality or tribe, it would not be counted as a loss to the federal budget. House Republicans had an identical rule when they controlled the chamber from 2017 to 2019. Advocates and critics agree the measure would be helpful to any effort by the House to transfer federal lands to states. But they disagree about the wisdom of such giveaways. Republicans and conservative groups see states as preferable stewards of most public lands.
