Prosecutors plan to charge teen accused of shooting 2 Miami-Dade students as adult
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A 16-year-old accused of shooting two students waiting for a school bus in northwest Miami-Dade appeared in court Friday morning, where prosecutors revealed they plan to charge him as an adult.
Emmanuel Morales faces an attempted murder charge among others after police said he shot two 12-year-old students as they waited for their school bus around 8 am Thursday morning near Northwest 109th Street and 10th Avenue.
A 16-year-old boy used a firearm to shoot two 12-year-old students and had a rifle and two guns when police officers arrested him, prosecutors said.
Miami-Dade Police Detective Argemis Colome said the two victims were approached by a 16-year-old who demanded their cellphones. When they said no, he immediately began firing at them, authorities said.
“These are two juveniles — two 12-year-olds. It could be our children just going to school. That is the last thing that any parent has on their mind — that their 12-year-olds that are waiting to go to school are going to get shot at,” Colome said.
According to police, one victim was hit in the thigh and ankle. The other was hit in their thigh and hand.
A witness, Ricrido Gaspard, spoke with Local 10 News and described the chaotic scene.
“I saw a kid shot in the leg,” Gaspard said. “He said, ‘I’m so in pain. I can’t hold it no more.’”
Police placed a nearby school on lockdown, allowing officers to search for Morales, who was later found hiding in a nearby shed, officers said.
Detectives released photos showing the guns that were found, which include two handguns and a rifle, all three of which were reported as stolen.
In court, the teen’s mother told the judge her son had problems before.
“The court system has failed my son,” said Morales’ mother. “I begged for help that my son is incompetent, he’s unstable and I begged for help and nobody has offered me any help. It’s sad that it has come to this.”
While in court, a judge said to Morales, “Emmanuel, I am ordering you to stay away from the victims in this case.”
A judge ordered that Morales be held without bond.
