We need to embrace transgender lives

Image
Rev Dr Kimberleigh Buchanan Several years ago, a church member invited me to attend a Transgender Day of Remembrance event in Atlanta. Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), Nov 20, was created to remember transgender people who have been murdered. I had long been an advocate for people who are trans; I knew about the high rates of murder for people who are trans, particularly, for transgender women of color. But that TDOR event changed me.Being in a room with so many beautiful people, people who lived with the awareness that violence against them is possible every time they leave the house…I was inspired by their courage to live as their true selves. In addition to inspiring me, that TDOR event also compelled me to make a firm commitment to do everything in my power as a Christian pastor to support people in the transgender community. I believe God creates every human being in God’s own image. I believe that every person is loved by God and worthy of human dig...

Lyman Lemack’s Obituary (1956 – 2022)

Image
Mr. Lyman Douglas Lemacks, known to family and friends as Doug, abruptly left our physical world on Sunday, November 13, 2022 at 3:28 am due to heart issues. Doug was 66 years young, born in Quincy, Florida on September 18, 1956. Doug’s first marriage to Crystal Denise Taylor in 1981 brought new life to this world with two sons, Stephen Taylor Lemacks, now 40, and Robert Douglas Lemacks, now 38. Doug has two grandchildren by his eldest son (Taylor and his wife Jennifer), Aiden Joseph Lemacks (9) and Abriella Mae Lemacks (3), whom he immensely adored. Doug embraced his grandparent status in life and spoiled his grandchildren with the finest toys and clothes for birthdays and holidays. Doug worked as one of the best surveyors in the Big Bend area and, some argue, in the state of Florida. He was employed at Sandco for much of his surveying career, until he decided to work for himself in the last few years. When he wasn’t working, he loved to fish Lake Talquin and play...

Photo Ops With Santa In Southwest Florida

Photo Ops With Santa In Southwest Florida Was there anything better than a child than preparing for your visit with Santa Claus? We made our Christmas lists, checked them twice and prepared to sit on the jolly man’s lap as we listed off all of the things we wanted him to bring on Christmas. Heck, we even dealt with the itchy and scratchy Christmas outfits we were forced to wear for the special day. And how could we forget about the moms and dads and grandparents standing at the beginning of the sometimes hour long lines we waited in? There they were in all of their glory trying to get us to smile so they could snap our picture with the big guy and have another Christmas memory. Truly a wonderful tradition. While visiting with Santa was exciting for most kids, there were some kiddos who left terrified and maybe a little traumatized. They did make for pretty good pictures though. Haha So, where can you make these memories with Santa in Southwest Florida this holida...

Southwest Florida artist chosen for Gulfshore Life’s Men of the Year

Image
NAPLES Many can relate to losing something priceless during Hurricane Ian. Maybe a family heirloom or pictures. But think about artists and their life’s work swept up in water in minutes. Hurricane Ian devastated Chad Jensen’s gallery Method and Concept. Jensen is one of the few people who can describe the remnants of Hurricane Ian and make it sound like a piece of art. “When you walked in the entire floor was like a sheet of black glass. It was like a perfect, still pond like a reflection pond,” Jensen said, adding that, ”within 24 or 48 hours, it’s already oxidizing a lot of the steel things that were in the space or anything that was like exposed metal,” Jensen said. Jensen saved some pieces he made but he lost a lot, along with other artists’ work he displays. “It hurts a lot, because they’re all young, for the most part, younger-ish, you know, living artists,” Jensen said. “Their sole livelihood is based on their art pro...

Kevin Durant leads Brooklyn to 109-102 victory over Orlando, get back to .500

Image
The Nets are full of mystery, just not on a nightly basis. What goes on behind the scenes of the organizational decisions that have defined the franchise’s recent direction, who knows? Ditto on what tomorrow’s drama will be – you know it’s coming. But if you couldn’t tell where this game was headed after three minutes, you must be new around here. Jacque Vaughn called Brooklyn’s first time-out after those three minutes, after seeing, presumably, the exact start he wished to avoid. The score was 12-5, Orlando; that score perfectly reflects the feel of the game. Brooklyn came out sloppy, and while the offense has actually been league-average with Ben Simmons and Nic Claxton sharing the floor, it wasn’t early on Monday night. A cramped paint led to turnovers, and the young magic worked up a sweat and a lead. The tenor of the game was decided. “I think we’re going to create a little blooper reel…we definitely had some...

Orlando Magic have a lot more to show after one quarter of a season

Image
Final Orlando Magic 102 Brooklyn Nets 109 The helplessness is often seen on the Orlando Magic’s faces. This is a team stuck in neutral and trying to grind its way out of its losing ways. But still short on answers. More often than not, so too has been a determination to keep fighting and keep trying. But this team is playing with one hand behind its back. With eight rotation-caliber players out for Monday’s back-to-back game in Brooklyn following a 30-point loss to the Philadelphia 76ers at home, the Orlando Magic were just hoping to survive and regroup some. The NBA schedule is unforgiving and the magic had to find a way to play. So much has been seemingly swirling around the team as frustration has mounted through the first quarter of the season. The team has shown plenty of promise and potential. But so little of it has come together. The Orlando Magic ended the first quarter of the season with another frustrating loss as ...

UF’s technology is positively impacting Florida’s agriculture sector

Image
Florida’s farmers play a vital role in the health of our state and nation: growing the food we eat and supporting our local economy. According to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, in 2020, Florida was home to 47,400 commercial farms, covering over 9.7 million acres. All told, Florida farms contributed $7.8 billion to the state’s economy. As someone who is deeply rooted in our region’s agricultural industry, I’ve seen firsthand how technological innovations have helped propel production, reduce waste, and allowed producers to navigate challenges in more efficient ways. Right now, Florida ranks 15th highest in total number of farms in the nation, but tech can help us maintain and even grow our impact. Here in our own backyard, the University of Florida has developed innovative, state-of-the-art technologies to give Florida growers a leading edge and our state agriculture a boost. These developments have positively impacted how c...

Florida Dems face a ‘battlefield’ in upcoming legislative session

Image
Florida Democrats in the Legislature face an uphill battle in the upcoming 2022‐2024 term, following a devastating general election this month that created a supermajority in the GOP House and Senate chambers. State Sen. Lauren Book, of Broward County, will lead the Florida Senate Democratic Caucus, and State Rep. Fentrice Driskell, of Hillsborough County, will be the first Black Democratic leader in the Florida House of Representatives. “The weight of this moment is not lost on me. The responsibility of this job, especially now, is extremely mighty,” Book said Monday afternoon during the Senate’s designation in the Capitol building. “And members, I intend not only to meet this moment, but to rise — because we may be down but we certainly are not out.” She added: “And what matters now, my friends, is how we rise. The last several months, we’ve been at war. Battles that began inside of this chamber spilled out into Senate districts across the state, and although we fought hard...

Anti-abortion protesters filled the rotunda of the FL Capitol building as lawmakers convened

Image
Well over a hundred anti-abortion protesters gathered on the 4th floor of the rotunda in the Florida Capitol building on Tuesday, shouting out “make Florida totally abortion free,” as the Florida Legislature convened Tuesday for an organizational session ahead of the 2023 regular session. While lawmakers could hear the chanting, the two new GOP leaders, Senate President Kathleen Passidomo and House Speaker Paul Renner, did not specifically address abortion in their speeches. Protesters of all ages, including some minors, chanted dozens of slogans in the vein of fully banning abortion in Florida. Currently, Florida has a 15-week abortion.  The protest was organized by Florida’s Voice for the Unborn. “Pro-life Republicans: step up,” one chant went. “No more exceptions,” went another. “Hee! Hee! Ho! Ho! Abortion’s got to go,” they also chanted. The variations went on as the organizational session ended in both the House and Senate. Lawmakers leaving from the two chambers, ...

House Speaker Paul Renner and Senate President Kathleen Passidomo made the announcement via a memorandum on Tuesday, as they wrapped their organizational session (a routine post-election gathering to swear in members and elect new leaders). “We anticipate issuing a formal proclamation following the Thanksgiving holiday,” Renner and Passidomo wrote. Specifics of the legislation to be debated are yet to come. gov. Ron DeSantis, who has been working with the Legislature on an agenda for the special session, has called for fixes to Florida’s insurance system, which has been experiencing wild increases in rates; rebating property taxes for people who suffered hurricane damage this year; and perhap...
