Tampa, Fla., Jan. 12, 2023 – The University of South Florida track and field opens their 2023 indoor season this weekend at the Jimmy Carnes Invitational hosted by the Gainesville Sports Commission in Gainesville, Fla.

Competition begins Friday with Annia Ashley and Nia Robinson competing in the women’s high jump set to start at 9:00 am Kobe Babin, Stone Baker, and Noah Bitter participate in the men’s pole vault, alongside Riley Hunt, Audrey Wuerffel, and Annalize Zeinemann in the women’s competition later in the day.

Alliya Boothe and Ameliya Richardson will represent USF in the women’s weight throw on Friday. Jadaja Baxter, Loren Johnson, and Kendal McDaniel compete in the women’s long jump on Friday at 12:00 pm concurrent with David Ajama and Victor Steiner in the men’s long jump.

Johann Jeremiah represents USF in the shot-put competition at 2:00 pm. Annia Ashley, Loren Johnson, and Nia Robinson compete in the women’s triple jump while Ajama competes for the men’s competition at 3:00 pm.

Romaine Beckford and Kendell Mosley will compete in the high jumps, followed by Boothe in the women’s shot-put competition immediately after to wrap up the first day of the meet.

Competition on the track begins with Cora Kolodge, Arden La-Rose, Patricija Roshofa, Alyssa Wyatt, and Ezekiel Shore competing in the women’s and men’s mile run.

Michael Bourne will run in the 60-meter hurdles for the men, with Chakiya Plummer representing the USF women in the event. Zahria Allrs, Doneisha Anderson, Jadaja Baxter, Shaniya Benjamin, Kayla Hugg, Zayne Jack, A’Kyrah O’Banner, and Terren Peterson run for USF in the 60-meters, while Jaleel Croal, Danelson Mahautiere, Monte Parker, Shevioe Reid, and Elijah Wright run for in the men’s event.

In the 800-meters, Anderson, La-Rose, Wyatt, Daunte O’Banion, Reid, and Shore race for USF’s men’s and women’s teams, followed by Kolodge in the women’s 3K race.

The meet wraps up with women’s and men’s competition in the 4×400-meter relay, respectively.

“It has been a long time since we have been able to compete indoors in Florida,” head coach Erik Jenkins said, “We are excited to begin our indoor season and look forward to this inaugural event.”

About USF Track and Field

The USF track and field team has earned 53 All-America selections and at least one All-
American in 10 of the last 12 years, including a record eight athletes claiming 11 honors in 2021. Tampa native Shaniya Benjamin set a program record earning three All-American honors
during the 2021 outdoor season, while triple jumper Matthew O’Neal, a 2016 graduate, became
USF’s first six-time NCAA All-American. Bulls have posted two NCAA runner-up finishes since
2013 – O’Neal (triple jump, 2016) and Courtney Anderson (high jump, 2013). Head coach Eric
Jenkins took over the program in 2020 and in the 2021 outdoor season the Bulls posted seven program records and 40 top 10 all-time program marks. USF hosted the 2018 NCAA Track and
Field East Preliminary and the 2021 AAC Outdoor Championship at the USF Track and Field
Stadium located on the east end of campus.

Democratic governors press U.S. Senate to act on voting rights legislation

WASHINGTON — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and 16 other Democratic governors are urging the U.S. Senate to pass two bills that aim to protect voting rights. Both measures need 60 votes to advance under Senate rules but have been stalled by Republican opposition in the evenly divided Senate. “Without decisive action by the federal government this year to protect voters’ access to the ballot and ensure the integrity and transparency of our elections, the voices of Americans across the country, especially Americans of color, will be suppressed,” the governors wrote in a Monday  letter  to U.S. Senate leadership. Governors who signed the letter include Jared Polis of Colorado, Tim Walz of Minnesota, Steve Sisolak of Nevada, Phil Murphy of New Jersey, Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico, Roy Cooper of North Carolina, Kate Brown of Oregon, Tom Wolf of Pennsylvania and Tony Evers of Wisconsin, among others. U.S. House GOP would make it easier for feds to give public lands away to states

U.S. House Republicans included in the new rules for the chamber they passed this month a provision meant to make it easier for Congress to give away public lands. The provision is a fairly technical piece of the 55-page  rules package . It affects internal House accounting and requires that anytime Congress were to give any federal lands to a state, municipality or tribe, it would not be counted as a loss to the federal budget. House Republicans had an identical rule when they controlled the chamber from 2017 to 2019. Advocates and critics agree the measure would be helpful to any effort by the House to transfer federal lands to states. But they disagree about the wisdom of such giveaways. Republicans and conservative groups see states as preferable stewards of most public lands.
