Church in Gainesville receives money through the African Cultural Heritage Action Fund

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – A group dedicated to preserving African American heritage is investing $4 million in churches around the country including one in North Central Florida.

Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Gainesville is receiving the money through the African Cultural Heritage Action Fund.

The first round of the Preserving Black Churches Grant program is designed for urgent maintenance needs.

Mount Carmel is in the Pleasant Street Historic District.

The grant will help replace the church’s roof protecting the building from water damage.

Concerns Grow Over Quality of Care as Investor Groups Buy Not-for-Profit Nursing Homes

Harris Meyer Shelly Olson’s mother, who has dementia, has lived at the Scandia Village nursing home in rural Sister Bay, Wisconsin, for almost five years. At first, Olson said, her mother received great care at the facility, then owned by a not-for-profit organization, the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society. Then in 2019, Sanford Health — a not-for-profit, tax-exempt hospital system — acquired the nursing home. The covid-19 pandemic struck soon after. From then on, the facility was regularly short of staff, and residents endured long wait times and other care problems, said Olson, a registered nurse who formerly worked at the facility. Now Scandia Village has a new, for-profit owner, Continuum Healthcare . Olson said she was reassured when Continuum hired two locals as the facility’s new administrator and nursing director. Florida Sen. Rick Scott said Tuesday that he would block any effort by the Biden administration to bring thousands of unvetted Palestinian refugees to the U.S., though there is no indication that the president intends to do so. Scott released a statement, saying: “I am gravely concerned about the pressure building from the radical left for President Biden to allow thousands of Palestinians to come to America. This would continue the disturbing trend we have seen from Democrat presidents of allowing unvetted and potentially dangerous individuals from nations and states that hate America to pour into our country.
