Sunburn — The morning read of what’s hot in Florida politics — 12.19.22

Good Monday morning. A longtime power player in Republican politics — serving under President Ronald Reagan and reaching the Executive Committee of the national party — is retiring from the lobbying firm he built into one of the state’s top 10 firms. But don’t expect to stop hearing from Al Cárdenas, who has been rated the “best in the business” for lobbying, according to The Hill. He’s also been co-Chair of the 2004 Bush-Cheney Florida Campaign and a key force propelling the Institute of Politics’ 2020 founding at Florida State University, where he’s the Chair of the Institute’s first Advisory Board. Al Cardenas may be retiring, but he’s not slowing down. “I like to call it a legacy phase,” Cárdenas said, describing what he will be pursuing after about 20 years spent building The Advocacy Group at Cardenas Partners. Yes, he’s planning to improve his golf handicap and add pounds to his bench press, but, mostly, he’s looking for ways to spread the heft of the insight he’s ga...

Paying the price: GRU customers question why their bills are so high

Watch above: Lisa Jordan, 54, talks about how her $2,000 Gainesville Regional Utilities bills have affected her business, Nature’s Pet Day Spa, off of West Newberry Road in northwest Gainesville. (Lauren Witte/WUFT News) Hayley Shea is a lifelong Gainesville resident who’s considering moving to another state. Why? Because her utility bills are just too high for someone who bakes cakes for a living. “I feel like they don’t want anybody living here besides college students and old white people,” Shea, 35, said of city officials and especially Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU). Shea said her utility bill averages $550-600 per month for an apartment off of Williston Road. That’s asking way too much of a single mother supporting her seven children, she said. “If there were nine days in a week, I would work nine days” to pay all of her bills, Shea said. Shea is not the only Gainesville native tempted to move because of GRU. M...
