NAPLES, Fla. – A large Florida black bear was spotted sifting through garbage cans and getting uncomfortable close to homes in Naples Manor on Wednesday.

Residents that recorded live along Catts Street and Georgia Avenue the bear on security cameras and cell phones.

“Definitely don’t want to meet up with him, that’s for sure. At least I don’t,” said Robert Howard, who lives along Catts Street.

He’s lived here for more than three decades. In that time, he’s never seen a bear on his street, that is, until Wednesday.

“Yeah, that’s huge,” Howard said while watching a video of the bear.

“No, the closest thing I’ve around here is deer,” added Kenny Law.

It’s enough to get his and his neighbor’s attention.

“Well, anything bigger than me, I feel like it’s too big,” Law said.

The Florida black bear was sifting through trash and was even seen walking by the front porch of a home just a few feet from the front door. That’s a little too close for comfort for some.

“What if I would just run face first into him when I come out,” said Dax Rudenak.

This is a busy time of year for the bears. They’re out and about because it’s the peak of bear activity. With colder weather comes hibernation season, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission Bear Management Program Coordinator David Telesco.

“This is a super active period for them, and they’re just trying to fatten up,” Telesco said. “They’re trying to get 20,000 calories a day. (24) 20,000 in a day.”

That’s 20 times more than what human’s typically consume every day.

An easy place to score those calories is your garbage.

“Maybe my food ain’t good enough for them, I don’t know,” said Howard, who has yet to see a bear.

With more and more development, Telesco said the area bears can forage for food is dwindling, meaning visits to urban areas are more common.

“I feel bad for the animals too, but I don’t need them walking around my yard,” said Marlene Riveria.

If you happen to find one out in the trash can or posted up on the front porch, experts say just make some noise.

“Most bears, it does not take much to scare them off,” Telesco said.
