Calusa Pines in Naples picked by Golf magazine for Florida’s Top 30

The inaugural Calusa Cup college golf tournament, held at Calusa Pines Golf Club in Naples, ended on Tuesday, April 6, 2021.

It’s not surprising that Calusa Pines Golf Course in Naples has been named to another prestigious “best courses” list. What is a little surprising is that it’s the only golf course in Southwest Florida to make Golf magazine’s “30 Best Golf Courses in Florida” that was released on Thursday (Dec. 22).

But there will be no complaining here.

The distinction for Calusa Pines, which is tucked away on a pretty piece of property east of I-75 off Immokalee Road, provides another opportunity to brag about how great Southwest Florida is for golf with many people visiting here, or even retiring here, because of the numerous high-quality public and private golf courses available in Collier and Lee counties.

Calusa Pines is a private golf course and as the experts at Golf point out, very unique because it is not tied to a gated community. In other words “pure golf” the magazine editors said in their description, and “quiet rounds are guaranteed.”

More impressive is the fact that in November, Calusa Pines made Golf’s list of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the US, coming in at No. 93

“The course encapsulates the best that Florida has to offer: scrubby, sandy soil; pine trees; the occasional lagoon; and some shockingly fine land movement,” said the course raters about Calusa Pines.

Rated above Calusa Pines on the Florida list were: No. 1 Seminole at Juno Beach, No. 2. TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course at Ponte Vedra Beach, No. 3 Streamsong-Red (Bowling Green) and Streamsong-Blue, which are located in Bowling Green, southeast of Tampa in the central part of Florida.

Democratic governors press U.S. Senate to act on voting rights legislation

WASHINGTON — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and 16 other Democratic governors are urging the U.S. Senate to pass two bills that aim to protect voting rights. Both measures need 60 votes to advance under Senate rules but have been stalled by Republican opposition in the evenly divided Senate. “Without decisive action by the federal government this year to protect voters’ access to the ballot and ensure the integrity and transparency of our elections, the voices of Americans across the country, especially Americans of color, will be suppressed,” the governors wrote in a Monday  letter  to U.S. Senate leadership. U.S. House GOP would make it easier for feds to give public lands away to states

U.S. House Republicans included in the new rules for the chamber they passed this month a provision meant to make it easier for Congress to give away public lands. The provision is a fairly technical piece of the 55-page  rules package . It affects internal House accounting and requires that anytime Congress were to give any federal lands to a state, municipality or tribe, it would not be counted as a loss to the federal budget. House Republicans had an identical rule when they controlled the chamber from 2017 to 2019. Advocates and critics agree the measure would be helpful to any effort by the House to transfer federal lands to states. But they disagree about the wisdom of such giveaways. Republicans and conservative groups see states as preferable stewards of most public lands.
