Sarah M. Barker, beloved mother, wife, sister, daughter, aunt, and friend passed away on Monday, December 5, 2022, in Naples, Florida. She was born Sarah Lou McMurry, affectionately called Sally, on February 17, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois to Doris (nee Baird) and Robert Noleman McMurry, PhD. She graduated from Homewood-Flossmoor High School and earned a BA from University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana in journalism. Sally met Michael Barker and married on May 22, 1974, in Jamaica. They moved back to the US, living in Chicago before settling in Naples, Florida in 1979. Sally worked as an on-air reporter and editor for WGN and UPI and later wrote articles for medical journals. She was a Red Cross Volunteer, a member of DAR and served as secretary of the USS Bayfield APA 33 Veterans Group. Sally was a fundamentally good person who lived her life with deep love of family and friends, compassion for others, insatiable curiosity, and a sophisticated sense of humor. Sally was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her son, William Barker. She is survived by her loving daughter, Mellanie Barker, her stepsons, Kevin (Claire) Barker, Neil (Angela) Barker, step-grandchildren Thomas, Michael and Lucy, her brother, Michael (Gayle) McMurry and nieces, nephew and nine grandnieces and nephews. The family requests memorials be made in Sally’s name to The Neighborhood Health Clinic, St. Matthew’s House, Guadalupe Center, or the William Barker Memorial Scholarship at Florida Gulf Coast University.
