Tallahassee counts down to 2023 with fireworks, music at Cascades Park

Close out 2022 with a trip through the decades as Countdown Downtown returns to Cascades Park as Tallahassee’s signature New Year’s Eve event from 6-10 pm Saturday. This year’s theme is decades, as the City of Tallahassee goes big with a fireworks show, live band and photo booth.

Keith Rodgers, from Black on Black rhyme, will be the host for the evening. DJ King Green wants to spin some tunes until beloved local band Tallahassee Nights Live takes the stage. They will take Tallahassee through the decades with the best sounds of jazz, soul, pop, hip hop and more.

Tallahassee Nights Live, or TNL, has been together for over 15 years, and have performed with other bands and in other countries. Formed in 2005 by Darius “Doc D” Baker, TNL was created as a monthly music showcase to help develop artists into the stars they dream of being. Doc D has performed and shared the stage with Brain Mcknight, D’angelo, Mary Mary and George Clinton.

“Our last Luau event with the Tallahassee Downtown Improvement Authority drew over 4,000 beautiful people to Cascades Park. This New Year’s Eve we are expecting an even larger bouquet of people. As we travel through the decades of music live on stage, there is going to be something for everybody! Bring your dancing shoes and leave your cares behind. This NYE ​​will definitely be one to remember,” said Doc D.

And host Keith will keep the breaks entertaining with comedy, poetry, trivia, and more before and after the fireworks start at 7 pm Black on Black rhyme consists of poets, singers, musicians, comedians, photographers, and designers that love to express themselves in a way that inspires others to do the same.

Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs, food, and drinks — or find them onsite. Mr. Lemonade will be there serving up hot dogs and refreshing lemonade, while Andrew’s Catering will also offer some dinner options and alcoholic beverages for sale.

The Countdown Downtown event has brought in as many as 6,000 people in the past to one of Tallahassee’s most treasured parks. Countdown Downtown will end at 10 pm, allowing for attendees to determine how they want to spend the rest of their evening ― whether that be at a bar or nearby event into the late hours of the night, or at home in their pajamas watching the ball drop on their TV.

Other restaurants in the area that will be celebrating include The Huntsman and Andrew’s Downtown. The Huntsman will offer a special five course chef’s tasting menu, and Andrew’s will host the band Soul Medicine.

It’s presented by the Tallahassee Downtown Improvement Authority with help from the City of Tallahassee Utilities, Visit Tallahassee, and the Downtown Business Association.
