Sanders leads Trinity Catholic past Gainesville in three game streak

Image
Trinity Catholic’s three-game win streak was in danger the minute they stepped foot in Gainesville. The Hurricanes feature three players 6 feet or taller in the tallest frontline the Celtics have faced all year. Gainesville made it a dogfight down the stretch and even pulled within four with just under 90 seconds to play, but smart play and a solid night of free throws helped the Celtics pull away 52-43 on Wednesday. Gainesville (6-5) jumped out to an early lead, ending the first quarter up 16-10. The Celtics (7-3) were flat and didn’t get better in the second quarter, allowing the Hurricanes to lead 26-18 at the half. In the locker room, Trinity Catholic head coach Matthew Moyer gave his team two scenarios. One where coach Moyer calls a timeout to stop the bleeding three minutes into the second half or the Celtics force Gainesville to call a timeout as their lead slips out of their fingers. “They got in us and after us early. We looked the moment in the face ...

Two bookish buddies are bringing their “show” to Tallahassee

Image
Two famous writers have joined forces to create a humorous mystery novel that they’ll be talking about in Tallahassee come January 13. The two insist the event will be more like a comedy stand-up routine than a typical book signing. The name of the new book is “House of Wolves.” One of its two authors is James Patterson. He said his latest collaborative effort has a popular theme at its core. “I think that people love these family sagas where the families are really screwed up. You got one in ‘Yellowstone,’ which is very popular. You got ‘Succession,’ which is different, but it’s another very powerful screwed up family. Way back you got the Corleones in ‘The Godfather.’ And this is another family, the Wolfs where you get ‘House of Wolves.’ It refers both to the football stadium where the pro team plays out there and also the Wolf family.” And, since pro football is involved, Patterson wrote the...

Gainesville lawyer, firm south by former client, claiming breach of contract

Image
Dec 21—A man who lost his legs in a workplace incident has filed a lawsuit against his former attorney, alleging that the lawyer did not turn over the man’s files after he hired new counsel, according to court documents. Zach and Jennifer Johnson filed a lawsuit Monday, Dec. 19, against Michael Weaver Jr. and the Weaver Law Firm in Hall County Superior Court. Attorney Matt Cook said his client, Zach Johnson, was working for the city of Toccoa when his legs were entrapped Dec. 2 in a baler machine. The attorney said Zach Johnson lost both legs below the knee and is still hospitalized. According to the lawsuit, the Johnsons originally hired Michael Weaver Jr. and the Weaver Law Firm to represent them and signed a contract. The lawsuit claimed that someone at the law firm attended a site inspection of the incident scene and took photos and videos of the baler machine. After the inspection, the Johnsons retained other counsel. The Johnsons’ new counsel reached ...

Click here for a transcript of the episode. Dr. Ashish Jha, the White House covid-19 response coordinator, is the guest for a wide-ranging interview on this week’s “What the Health?” podcast. Jha, who is on leave from his “day job” as dean of the Brown University School of Public Health, said he’s particularly worried about the nation making the transition from public health emergency status back to a more normal footing and routine — particularly for low-income and uninsured people who may not be able to get the kind of covid tests, treatments, and vaccines that have so far been free through federal subsidies. Jha said the Biden administration is doing more than the public realizes to study “long covid,” a set of conditions among a subset of patients who continue to suffer from an infection or its aftere...

She was an ABC News producer. She also was a corporate operative

Image
Updated December 21, 2022 at 5:01 PM ET NPR’s David Folkenflik reported this story with Mario Ariza and Miranda Green of Floodlight, a nonprofit newsroom that investigates the powerful interests stalling climate action. Television news producer Kristen Hentschel was doing precisely what journalists should do on a searing hot day in Stuart, Fla., in July 2018: She confronted a politician with unwelcome questions. Microphone and ABC News business card in hand, Hentschel rushed up to a candidate for the Florida House of Representatives before a debate, the candidate recalls, and asked him about 20 dead gopher tortoises that were reportedly found at a nearby construction site. Florida designates the species as threatened. As far as the candidate, Toby Overdorf, knew, there were no dead tortoises. And he would have known. Overdorf, an environmental engineer, served as the wildlife consultant to the construction project. Visibly flustered, Ov...

Red tide counts better as strong cold front hits Naples, Fort Myers

Image
The state is reporting that only background concentrations of red tide can be found south of the Sarasota area, meaning that Lee and Collier waters are apparently free of toxic concentrations. A red tide bloom has been lingering along the Southwest Florida coast for weeks, causing fish and shoreline bird kills. But the most recent Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports show only background concentrations in Lee and Collier. The bloom was measured at 1 million cells per liter and higher in both counties in recent months. Once blooms reach toxic levels, red tide can cripple the local tourism, real estate and recreational fishing industries — three of the top money-hauling professions in our region. With red tide season falling between late summer and late winter, here are five things you should know about Karenia brevis. 1-Red tide blooms are natural but modern conditions are not Red tide blooms have been documented along this coast for centuries, long b...

Why Gainesville changed its district boundaries

Image
Gainesville’s election district map has been revised after the City Council voted on Tuesday to approve a home rule ordinance, reapportioning the city’s boundary lines to comply with state law and account for continued growth in the area over the last 10 years. A significant change to the district map is the reduction of Ward 4, according to City Manager Bryan Lackey. “In general, Ward 4 had to shrink,” Lackey said. “That’s where the growth has been through Mundy Mill and the question is development since the last time we did a census.” The newly approved district map now shows Ward 4, which had included much of the downtown area, now receded back to the southwest — the center of much of the growth seen in Gainesville over the years. Ward 2 has now moved in to include much of the downtown area where Ward 4 once was. “Because of that, the other wards had to grow,” Lackey explained. “Ward 2 now comes in (and) goes a littl...

South Florida flight attendant recalls helping thwart notorious ‘shoe bomber’

Image
MIAMI – Thursday is 21-year anniversary of when a South Florida flight attendant helped take down a shoe bombing terrorist, forever changing the way we travel. Back on Dec 22 of 2001, American Airlines Flight 63 was heading to Miami from Paris when flight attendant Hermis Moutardier was alerted about a passenger lighting matches. She asked the man what he was doing, and warned him that smoking was not allowed on the plane. “He basically put a match in his mouth like he was cleaning his teeth, and that is a very European custom,” she recalled. But as Moutardier walked back to the cockpit area, she was reminded of one vital detail: “I was like, ‘okay, during the meal service, he didn’t want to eat anything. Why is he cleaning his teeth?’” Moutardier’s instinct told her to confront the man again. “He ignored me, so what I did: I just grabbed him and pulled him,” she recalled. “And that’s when I saw the shoe in between his legs. T...

Gators Ink Nation’s No. 12 class, led by QB Jaden Rashada

Image
GAINESVILLE — Florida coach Billy Napier’s 2023 class is really his first, given he had 10 days upon his arrival to put together the 2022 group. During the final month, the Gators slipped from No. 8 to No. 12 in 247Sports team rankings, but the average 92.34 is fifth, .10 ahead of Miami. Other than missing on a tight end, Napier and Co. addressed every area of need, highlighted by quarterback Jaden Rashada. Top of the class – QB Jaden Rashada, 6-3¼, 185 (Pittsburg, Calif.): 247Sports rates Rashada a 5-star after he completed 62.4% of his throws for 3,055 yards and 32 touchdowns against 13 interceptions in 2022. (Matt Stamey/AP) – WR Aidan Mizell, 6-2, 180 (Orlando): If not for a Week 1 leg injury, Mizell would have pushed for a 5-star ranking if he had built off a breakout 2021 season with 47 catches for 1,003 (21.3 yards per catch) and 18 touchdow...
