Bell, Henderson make history for Southwest Florida women’s basketball

Image
Monday’s WNBA Draft was, without a doubt, a night to remember for both Kierstan Bell and Destanni Henderson. “It’s been crazy but a good crazy,” said Henderson. First, Bell, who rewrote the record books in her two seasons at FGCU, was taken 11th overall in the first round by the Las Vegas Aces becoming the second Eagles’ basketball player ever to be drafted and the first getting taken in the first round. “I’m grateful to have this opportunity and I’m going to take this with me and hold it with me in my back pocket and get to work,” said Bell. Now, the two-time Becky Hammon Mid Major Player of the Year heads to Vegas to be coached by none other than Becky Hammon herself. “That’s so crazy. I didn’t expect it but it’s an honor to be under a coach like that,” Bell said. Meanwhile, Henderson, the three-time state champ at Fort Myers High, was selected nine picks later by the Indiana Fever. Coming from a hometown synonymous with football players, Henderson becomes the first

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Tallahassee’s Capital Hospital celebrated the gift of life Wednesday, honoring a local family whose son saved two people through organ donation. Johnquez Grayer was the very first “donation after circulatory death,” or DCD, heart donor in this region. This kind of procedure is made possible because of new technology, and hospital staff say it will increase the donor pool by up to 30%. Grayer’s mother, Ceiji Grayer, spoke briefly at the ceremony. “On March 28, 2001, a prince was born by the name of Johnquez Grayer,” Ceiji Grayer said. “He was a beautiful person.” After a pause, Ceiji was unable to continue speaking. Janet Shipman, a representative with LifeQuest, read the rest of her remarks. “Growing up, he was the happiest child and always had a smile on his face,” Shipman read. Johnquez died last year at 19, and he gave two people the gift of life by donating his heart and kidney. Capital Hospital staff honored him to mark “Donate Life”

A day of celebration encapsulates Mike McLeod’s impact on Tallahassee Community College baseball

Image
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — In 32 years as head coach of the Tallahassee Community College baseball team, Mike McLeod has notched 1,056 career wins, 5 outright Panhandle Conference championships and has coached five All-Americans and six major leaguers. That’s just a short list of a seemingly never-ending onslaught of accolades Mac has earned at TCC. But beyond every record he’s set, behind that hall of fame career has been a man who did things the right way. And that is the legacy everyone will remember him for. “You did things right. We knew what we were getting and we still do when we get a TCC player.” Let those words of Florida State head baseball coach Mike Martin Jr. stand as a testament to the way Mike McLeod coached and brought up young men who found themselves lucky enough to be in his locker room. “It was more than just baseball. He always made sure you were growing as a person. He took academics very seriously. Made sure everyone was going to class,” adds f

Hurricane organization retires ‘Ida;’ announces name replacement—Orlando Sentinel

The name Ida will never again be used to label a hurricane. “Ida” was retired Wednesday from the list of tropical storm names during the World Meteorological Organization’s annual hurricane committee due to the overwhelming damages it caused last year — the third busiest storm season on Atlantic record. Last year, tropical storms and hurricane damages cost the United States $80 billion — $75 billion of which was caused by Category 4 Hurricane Ida making it the fifth costliest storm in US history, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. But those estimates weren’t just the $55 billion in property and coastal damages observed in Louisiana, where Ida made landfall. After marching inland toward the northeastern US with heavy rain and floodwaters, Ida racked up another $20 billion as a post-tropical storm — the most since Super Storm Sandy in 2012. Ida’s wrath over the northeastern region surprised meteorologists, said Philip Klotzbach, a Colorado State U

An Explosion in Road Rage Shooting

Paul Castro, clutches a photo of his three children at a park in Houston, on March 30, 2022. (Annie Mulligan/The New York Times) HOUSTON — The trouble started with an argument between two drivers merging in slow traffic after a Houston Astros baseball game last summer. It ended with two gunshots, fired from a moving Buick and exploding through the glass of a fleeing Ford pickup truck. The bullets missed the truck’s driver, Paul Castro, but one — just one — struck his teenage son, David, who sat in the passenger seat. As Castro drove to get help, a 911 operator told him to apply pressure to the wound at the back of his son’s head. But David didn’t make it. The random pointlessness of the killing shocked Houston. But it was one of dozens of similar incidents across the country over the past year amid an explosion of shootings and killings attributed to rage on the road. David Mamet’s Fox News MadLibs word salad about pedophile teachers is a sight to behold

Image
Hello, and welcome to another day in the Inferno, where Pulitzer prize winning playwright David Mamet is on Fox News decrying the pedophilic impulses of school teachers. Discussing the very real and not at all made-up or nakedly homophobic moral panic over “grooming” in schools, Mamet told Mark Levin, “This has always been the problem with education. Teachers are inclined — particularly men, because men are predators — to pedophilia.” Mamet, who, once again, has won or been nominated for the most prestigious awards in play- and screenwriting, offered this pile of QAnon MadLibs for context: “If there’s no community control over the schools, what we have is kids not only being indoctrinated but groomed in a very real sense by people who are, whether they know it or not, sexual predators. Are they abusing the kids physically? No, I don’t think so, but they’re abusing them mentally and using sex to do so.” In the short clip, Mamet also says that the “grooming” trouble started w

For Deckerhoff, after 43 years as the Voice of the Seminoles, it’s time. “Voices have a timeline, and my timeline is up, and someone else will takeover.
