Several charitable groups arrived in cars at Stranahan Park in Fort Lauderdale before the sun went down to deliver blankets and clothes to the homeless. Shelly Caron and her mother Cynthia Schroeder dropped off blankets to a group of a dozen men

Southwest Florida Online – Sunday Morning News: Help With Medicare For Seniors

“What’s Your Zip Code” – Will You Qualify For Medicare Discounts? Confused about the advertisements offering free benefits like dental, vision, and drugs? So we were, and we attempted to navigate through the confusion and hype offered by insurance companies and called Medicare and Social Security directly today. First we tried to get official information from Medicare directly to see how to qualify for extra help in paying for Medicare. We called 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227.) The operator answered within a few minutes and put us through the screening questions, asking for social security number, name, address. Then asking how much Part B Medicare would cost this year and how to quality for extra help, we heard the operator apparently reading from a script explaining how to apply for Social Security and Medicare, information we were’t asking for. It was eventually confirmed that this year’s Part B was $170.10 for folks already signed up for Part B. We would have to call

Tampa Bay marks 42 years since deadly Blackthorn collision

Image
TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — It’s been 42 years since the USCGC Blackthorn collided with a tanker and sank near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge The Blackthorn collision in the mouth of Tampa Bay was one of the deadliest events in the Coast Guard’s 231-year history. According to reports, Blackthorn had just completed her overhaul at the Gulf Tampa Drydock Company when it was overtaken by the Russian passenger ship Kazakhstan. The ship navigated to almost mid-channel to resume course as the tanker, Capricorn was standing in the bay. Capricorn started turning left, but the ships were unable to pass port-to-port or make radio contact. Capricorn’s pilot blew two short whistle blasts to signal that the ships pass starboard-to-starboard. The officer on deck of the Blackthorn issued orders for evasive action, but they were unable to avoid a collision. The Capricorn’s anchor became embedded in the tender’s hull and ripped open the port side of the Blackthorn, causing the ship to capsize. Twen

UF response to political interference controversy is weak

Image
The University of Florida’s reputation has been battered in recent months due to administrators bowing to political pressure. University officials have tried denying the problem or taking half measures in an attempt to make it go away. A federal judge’s ruling last week showed that UF’s weak response is insufficient. Chief US District Judge Mark Walker blocked UF from enforcing a policy that gave administrators discretion over allowing professors to serve as expert witnesses in lawsuits. In the ruling, Walker compared UF to China repressing dissent in Hong Kong. “If those in UF’s administration find this comparison upsetting, the solution is simple. Stop acting like your contemporaries in Hong Kong,” he wrote. Miami Heat Injury Report: Kyle Lowry out against LA Clippers

Image
The understaffed Clippers need all the help they can get on their brutal 8-game road trip and it seems like the Miami Heat may be understaffed themselves. Kyle Lowry, KZ Okpala, Markieff Morris and Victor Oladipo will all line up against the Clippers. Also, Jimmy Butler will be questionable with a toe irritation. Lowry is out for personal reasons and has not played a game since January 15 – this is his sixth consecutive missed game. As always, the Clippers will be undermanned. The team are still without their two best players in Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. They will also be without Marcus Morris. Still, they found a way to rack up one massive comeback after another. LA is currently on a two-game winning streak after defeating the Washington Wizards and Orlando Magic in a head-to-head. They defeated the Wizards with an historic 35-point comeback and defeated the Magic with a 14-point comeback. At this point, it would be fair to assume that the Clippers’ scout is that t

St. Petersburg police officer fired after improperly using taser

The 64-year-old, who was in a wheelchair, did not offer any physical resistance in a manner warranting an arrest, police said in a statement. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A St. Petersburg police officer lost his job after he was accused of improperly using his taser during an arrest last summer. A review convened by department police chief Anthony Holloway found that Officer Matthew Cavander violated department policies and procedures, according to a press release. Holloway is expected to speak more about the case and the officer’s firing during a news conference at 10 a.m. Thursday. Police say Cavinder, who has been with the St. Petersburg Police Department since March 2020, responded on June 20, 2021 to a call about an unauthorized beggar at a gas station on 22nd Ave. P. 4890 answered. He found a 64-year-old Timothy Grant who was wanted on pending warrants for failing to appear at a court hearing. According to police, Cavinder was seen on body camera video using his taser mu

Gainesville High grad Xavier Bledson builds on prolific basketball talent as his career blossoms at Division-I Indiana State

Image
Bledson can remember it like it was yesterday. He wasn’t even supposed to be in the Gainesville lineup against Apalachee, but was pulled in when one of his standouts was benched for the regional tournament. Bledson, sensing it was his moment to shine, was not about to let such a big opportunity slip by. “I would say that was his coming out party,” said Gainesville boys coach Chuck Graham, who was an assistant coach at the time. With just a few seconds left and a point behind, Bledson didn’t flinch. Bledson took the pass down the left wing, maneuvered the ball through traffic and put a shot from the backboard at the buzzer, which came in and sent the Red Elephants into the postseason. “When it went in, everyone stormed the court,” Bledson said. “I definitely remember that game.” Since then, Bledson has continued to train at the gym and is a student of the game, incorporating skills from some of the league’s best into his own repertoire. Now standing at 6ft, 6in and a

Thieves Target Luxury Cars in SW Miami-Dade – NBC 6 South Florida

Image
Police are hoping to pump the brakes on a group of burglars who target luxury cars in the southwest Miami-Dade neighborhood. Surveillance video from the Siddons’ front yard shows an instance where the burglars got away with a high-end vehicle in the middle of the day. “They were very quick,” Luciana Fragali Siddons said. It was around 4 pm on a Saturday, and as the Siddons family hosted a barbecue in their backyard — the theft was happening in their front yard. They didn’t realize what was going on until one of their guests walked out to grab a jacket from her car. “She comes back in the house and says, ‘My car was stolen,'” Siddons said. The Alpha Romeo SUV was stolen — Siddons says her friend’s car was unlocked. The thieves also got away with cash and a wallet from two other cars parked in the driveway. “My biggest concern is what if when my friend came out to get her jacket they were actually doing it? What would they do? Are they armed? That is my biggest con

Pharmacies Are Turning Away Immunocompromised Patients Seeking 4th Covid Shot

Image
Patients with weakened immune systems — who are at high risk from covid-19 — say pharmacies are turning them away when they seek additional vaccine doses recommended by federal health officials. Alyson Smith became eligible this month for a fourth vaccine dose because her medications leave her immunocompromised. Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention encourages most adults to receive a total of three mRNA vaccines — two “primary” vaccinations and a booster — the agency now advises people with weak immune systems to receive three primary shots plus a booster, for a total of four doses. Many people are confused about the difference between a primary vaccine series and a booster. A primary vaccine series helps people build antibodies to a new pathogen, while a booster combats waning immunity. As Smith learned, many pharmacists are unaware that the CDC’s vaccine guidance has changed. Smith booked her vaccine appointment online. But when she showed up at a Ch

Tampa Bay Lightning has taken a break in the upcoming schedule

Image
TAMPA, Fla. — Midway through the NHL season, the Tampa Bay Lightning got off to a quick start, finishing first (with the Florida Panthers on 61 points) in the Eastern Conference. But things will slow down. The Lightning will have a very light schedule for the next month with just eight games from now through the end of February. “I think it’s a good thing for the whole team to take a break and relax, heal a little bit,” Lightning forward Ondrej Palat said. “The last two months have been crazy. There are so many games. We will need everyone who is in shape for these two months.” The gap in the schedule was caused by the All-Star hiatus combined with a possible Olympic hiatus. But after the NHL pulled out of the Beijing Winter Olympics, those two weeks are now being used to reschedule games that have been canceled by COVID-19. “It’s like you don’t worry about things that you can’t control, especially the schedule,” said Lightning forward Alex Killorn. “Schedules have chan

Tallahassee police officer could face criminal charges after prison fight

Image
A first-year Tallahassee police officer has been fired and is likely to be prosecuted after a fight with a man booked in the Leon County jail. About two hours after the Tallahassee Democrat first reported the incident, TPD chief Lawrence Revell announced in a press release Monday night that Officer Charles Hansford had been fired as part of a criminal investigation. Prosecutor Jack Campbell previously told the Democrat he would “anticipate indictments in the future.” In a prepared statement, Revell said the incident was a violation of TPD’s policies. “We hold the men and women who wear this uniform to the highest standard,” Revell said. “We take incidents like this very seriously and will hold accountable those who violate department policies.” TPD released a one-minute video of the incident after officers stopped the man around 3 a.m. on January 18 following an accident near the intersection of Blair Stone and Centerville streets. The man performed poorly on sobriety test

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers retool in a 7-round mock draft

Tom Brady #12 of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before the 2022 NFL Draft (Photo by Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images) The Tampa Bay Buccaneers retool for perhaps one last big run in this 7-round mock draft. The defending Super Bowl champions will not return to the NFL’s biggest stage. In fact, they don’t even get a chance to play for that opportunity as they are eliminated by the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs. Now the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are eyeing the 2022 NFL Draft along with 27 other teams in the league. This upcoming offseason will be incredibly important for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They’ve benefited over the last two seasons as veterans took pay cuts to play with Tom Brady for a ring shot. This could go on, but there’s no guarantee Brady will be back on the field next year. Additionally, the Bucs may lose many key plays. The list of upcoming free agents for the Buccaneers is long. On the offensive side, it includes almost the entire running bac

The UF presidential quest must be open and transparent

Image
As the University of Florida prepares to search for its next president, state legislatures are trying to make it easier to hide contenders for the position from the public. Bills under consideration in the current legislative session, HB 703 and SB 520, would protect the names of candidates for state university or college presidency from publication until finalists are selected. The legislation would also close candidate screening sessions to the public. But even under current law, a shadow selection process can take place in secret that violates Florida’s Sunshine Law. During its last presidential quest, UF held public meetings on issues such as compensation for the job, but met privately with serious contenders to keep their names private until late in the proceedings.
