In FL, girls did worse than boys in 4th grade math during COVID pandemic

Image
Girls performed worse than boys in 4th grade math during the course of the COVID pandemic in Florida, according to new national data. And the difference, often described as the “achievement gap” between various demographics, widened since 2019 compared to scores in 2022. In 2019, 4th grade male students in Florida had an average scale score of 248 and the female students scored 244. But in 2022, the gap widened. Male 4th graders scored 244 in math and female students scored 238, resulting in a six-point difference. The data comes from 2022 National Assessment of Educational Progress, also referred to as NAEP scores or the Nation’s Report Card, which assesses subjects such as math and reading across the country using a sampling in specific grades. The scores indicate proficiency in the subject matter, based on a 0-500 scale, and it varies by grade. For 4th graders taking the math assessment, students earning a 249 are considered “proficient.” The NAEP scores or the repor...

While there, Roark and Matthews helped complete three jobs and visited with one homeowner who just the day before had accepted Christ during a visit from another DR team. “The woman I met lost a lot in her home, but was changed forever after she found Jesus,” Roark told the Baptist Message. “To meet her and to hear her story, which was so uplifting and encouraging. Just to see how God was at work amongst all that devastation left me wanting to go on another disaster relief trip. “Both of us were tired from the work, but after we got back to Louisiana, we were refreshed and can...

How claims about a federal abortion ban are roiling one state as the midterms near

Image
WILMOT, New Hampshire — Voters in this swing state are among the relatively few Americans who will decide control of Congress during November’s midterm elections, shaping domestic and foreign policy for the next two years and delivering a verdict on Joe Biden’s presidency. Granite Staters interviewed by States Newsroom, during a mid-October week trailing U.S. Senate and House candidates at stops in strip malls and diners, are focused on the stark rise in inflation, especially the cost of energy — as well as the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision  to end the nationwide, constitutional right to abortion. The two issues and more will come to a head on Nov. 8 when New Hampshire voters will decide whether to keep their four-member congressional delegation entirely blue or add some red to the mix. Along with voters in other states with close contests like Georgia, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, the ballots they cast will determine whether Democrats continue their narrow contro...

Miami Beach condo building evacuated near deadly collapse

AP MIAMI BEACH (AP) — An evacuation order has abruptly forced out residents of a 14-story oceanfront building on the same avenue where a condominium collapse killed nearly 100 people last year. The city posted an unsafe structure notice Thursday evening at the Port Royale condominium, Miami Beach spokesperson Melissa Berthier said in an email. A structural engineering report prompted the evacuation of the 164-unit structure, which is in the process of undergoing a required recertification. An engineer discovered that a main support beam identified for repair 10 months ago had shifted and that a crack in the beam had expanded, and other structural supports may need repair as well, the report said. At least one observer said the damage extends beyond a single support beam. People are also reading… “There’s cracks in the column, cracks in the base, I mean in the garage, in the two storage garages, there’s cracks in the beams, everywhere,”...

Miami-Dade Murder Rate Dropped in 2021 by Nearly 15% – NBC 6 South Florida

Image
Miami-Dade County’s murder rate dropped in 2021, going against trends in other major cities across the country where murders rose to levels not seen in decades. Figures released by the medical examiner’s office this week showed Miami-Dade had 249 murders in 2021, a decrease of 41 from 2020, or about a 15% drop. In comparison, Chicago had just under 800 murders in 2021, the most in the Windy City since 1996. “To put it in comparison, Philadelphia, Chicago, 500, 800 homicides in 2021 alone. So Miami-Dade really is bucking the national trend,” said Alex Piquero, a professor of criminology at the University of Miami. Piquero said the Miami-Dade Police Department’s “Operation Summer Heat” contributed to the decline. The operation, which began in June and involved dozens of law enforcement agencies, was designed to take guns off the streets and targeted violent people and violent areas of the county. Officials said the operation led to m...
