Naples Winter Wine Festival to benefit Valerie’s House, bereaved children

Image
NAPLES The Naples Winter Wine Festival kicks off this week, and 2023 focused on raising money to support children’s mental health. One of those groups helping Southwest Florida kids is Valerie’s House, a nonprofit that provides support for children grieving the death of a loved one. The first things you notice when you walk into Valerie’s House at 819 Myrtle Terrace in Naples are the bright colors and a sprawling paper tree. Mackenzie Francois added a green leaf and explained what it represented. “All the kids come, and they write the loved one’s name on a leaf,” Mackenzie said. Her own leaf is in remembrance of her mother. “It says ‘love you,’ and I wrote the letters of the song that she and I would sing when I was a kid,” Mackenzie said. The song is “Because You Loved Me” by Celine Dion. When Mackenzie was 16, her mom suffered a stroke and died months later. Not only did Mackenzie lose the rock in her life, but she also had to move to Southwest Florida from the ea

Preparing your estate with a terminal illness—Orlando Sentinel

Image
Q: I was recently diagnosed with a terminal disease. I might not die for a couple of years, but I want to get my house in order. What should I do first? – MM, Longwood A: There are several estate planning documents you should consider. You may also need documents for incapacity as well. An attorney specializing in this area can guide you. Retirement accounts with beneficiaries and joint accounts with your wife will help avoid probate on those assets. – Gregg Collier Q: I recently inherited a parcel of vacant land in Florida from my dad’s estate. What is my cost basis? – MH, Orlando A: Under current law, the basis of inherited real property is its market value on the deceased’s date of death or an alternative date nine months after death. A property appraisal by a qualified appraiser is used to establish the property’s market value. Consult your attorney and tax professional for assistance. —Sylvia C. “Chris” Presley Have a question? Will Miami be in search of another upgrade at running back?

Image
The Dolphins’ running game was expected to see tangible growth in 2022. Coach Mike McDaniel came to Miami after helping motto intricate rushing offenses with the 49ers. The Dolphins signed running backs Raheem Mostert and Chase Edmonds and fullback Alec Ingold in the offseason. Miami even traded Edmonds and brought in Jeff Wilson Jr. to provide a midseason boost. But the Dolphins again finished the season with one of the worst rushing games in the NFL. Now, all of the Dolphins’ top running backs are slated for free agency. In the second of a series of position reviews, the Miami Herald will examine the team’s running back situation. Next up is wide receiver. 2022 IN REVIEW The Dolphins opened the season with Mostert and Edmonds as the lead backs, but the rushing offense fell behind a dynamic passing game. By November, Edmonds, whose playing time had dipped, was traded to the Broncos and Miami acquired Wilson in a separate trade, bringing another familiar face to McDa

A former student who accused her South Florida high school teacher of having sex with her in his classroom took the stand again at his Miami-Dade trial Thursday. Jason Meyers, 47, is facing three counts of sexual activity with a minor by a person in custodial authority following his February 2016 arrest. Meyers was teaching English and creative writing at Miami Palmetto Senior High School when the student who was 17 at the time said Meyers had sex with her inside his classroom. Meyers has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing as the case has been stalled for years by Meyers’ change in defense attorneys and the COVID-19 pandemic. The former student testified Wednesday on the first day of the trial, becoming emotional as she spoke about the alleged physical contact with Meyers. She was back on the stand Thursday, where prosecutors asked her if she was still in love with Meyers. “Over the course of time I re

Mysterious corn stalks taking over Cape Coral woman’s yard

Image
CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Corn took over the internet last year with the viral “Corn Kid” video. Now it’s taking over Rafina Marinelli’s yard in Cape Coral. Marinelli first thought the mysterious plants were weeds. Then, they kept growing… so she thought it was bamboo. Once it sprouted corn, she realized it was corn stalks, but she had no idea how nearly a dozen of them ended up in her yard. “I just saw little ones popping up all over the place,” she said, “that was when I was like, “oh okay, it’s corn.”” The mystery lingers as to how they got there. After posting in a Facebook group, Marinelli got some theories about the corn’s origin. “I think the one that I agree with is that people left their bird feeders out and it spread the seed everywhere,” she said. Marinelli isn’t convinced these stalks have been a part of her yard for too long either. “And even my landscaper was actually the landscaper for the house before I bought the house and he said he never saw corn before

Teachers would get $60K minimum salary under bill in Congress making grants to states

Image
WASHINGTON – A panel of policymakers and educators, including author Dave Eggers and former U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, gathered at the U.S. Capitol this week to promote the American Teacher Act. The bill, if passed, would authorize the federal government to create four-year grants for states to enact and enforce minimum school teacher salary requirements of $60,000 or more. The program would start in fiscal 2024. It would not mandate teacher raises. “We’re here today to advocate for our teachers, our educators, our saving grace that rescues families and our children every day,” said Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Florida, sponsor of the bill and a former schoolteacher. “We want our teachers to be paid a livable wage. A wage that is fair, a wage that is commensurate with today’s economy.” Rep. Wilson introduced the  American Teacher Act  in the House of Representatives on Dec. 14, and is expected to re-introduce it in this Congress, though it’s likely to run into oppos

Public lands near Minnesota’s Boundary Waters withdrawn from federal mining leases

Image
WASHINGTON — After more than a year of assessment and debate, the U.S. Department of the Interior on Thursday announced the withdrawal of more than 225,000 acres of public lands near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Minnesota from federal mine leasing programs. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland signed  Public Land Order 7917 , which protects areas of the Superior National Forest from federal geothermal and mineral extraction leases for the next 20 years. The lands being withdrawn are  predominantly in the northern portion of the Superior National Forest. The release cited departmental concerns over the impacts of mining on ecosystem health, tribal rights, and the local recreation economy. “The Department of the Interior takes seriously our obligations to steward public lands and waters on behalf of all Americans,” Haaland said in the release. “With an eye toward protecting this special place for future generations, I have made this decision using the best-avai

National Dems ready to OK new 2024 primary voting calendar, despite uncertainty in two states

Image
WASHINGTON — The full Democratic National Committee is set to vote in just days about a decision to ratify a new lineup of five states that would lead the nation in primary voting for Democratic presidential candidates in 2024. But approval of the new calendar at a meeting scheduled for Feb. 4 in Philadelphia won’t be the last step in what’s become a contentious process. Democrats in New Hampshire will still need to get their Republican-controlled state government to change a law that says the state must schedule its primary ahead of similar contests and to expand access to early voting — both of which GOP lawmakers have said they won’t do. Georgia Democrats also will need to get their GOP secretary of state to change the state’s presidential primary date to match the DNC’s requirements — a similarly unlikely feat. If the two states’ Democrats don’t, in fact, get Republicans to follow along with the DNC’s plan, waivers will become void, moving New Hampshire and Georgia back
