Judge refuses to dismiss migrant flights case

Image
A Leon County circuit judge Friday rejected a request by Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration to dismiss a lawsuit filed after the state flew about 50 migrants from Texas to Massachusetts in September. Judge John Cooper’s ruling set the stage for a full hearing in the constitutional challenge filed by state Sen. Jason Pizzo, D-North Miami Beach. The flights to Martha’s Vineyard drew national attention and came as DeSantis, a potential 2024 Republican presidential candidate, frequently criticizes federal immigration policies. The lawsuit deals with the interplay of the state budget and substantive laws. It contends that part of this year’s budget used to pay for the flights violated the Florida Constitution because it created a new program and changed laws about issues such as contracting. “I deny the defendants’ motion to dismiss on the grounds that I think we need to just hear out these issues.” Cooper said after a roughly two-hour hea...

“An incredible race by Ismael. He’s worked really hard to get to this point and when you own a record in Florida State’s record book, it usually means you’re a world-class athlete,” Head Coach Bob Braman said. “Jeremiah had a great start to his season today. His mark was better than his outdoor personal bests, and we can’t wait to see his improvement throughout the season.” The long jump was the highlight of the day for the Noles as they took four out of the top six spots. Joining Davis was Curtis Williams (7.62m) in fourth, Kyvon Tatham (7.38m) in fifth and Jaiden Rollins (7.33m) in sixth. In the 60m dash, Taylor Banks finished fourth (6,628), and Amir Willis (6,630) finished right behind him in fifth. Samuel Field had a great day in the mile finishing second with a time of 4:05.38. Naples Eagles cornerback Ben Bouzi is a top college football recruit

Image
Checking out the first 7v7 Elite Championship Series event at Merritt Island High School helped open up the door to several 2024 prospects. Perhaps the most intriguing performance came from Naples (Fla.) High School cornerback Ebenezer “Ben” Bouzi . The 6-foot-1 and 180-pound cornerback and wide receiver had a fantastic performance. From watching his second and third games for DNA 7v7, the most important aspect of Bouzi’s performance stemmed from his ability to hunch down in his cornerback stance, effortlessly backpedal, and then suddenly spring forward to attack the football in the air. He’s been blessed with the quick-twitch athleticism necessary to play cornerback at an elite level. His ability to bend, change direction, and mirror wide receivers was replicated play after play. Bouzi’s open-field speed was also on display during crossing routes and the few times his counterpart at receiver attempted to run past him, of which none were success...

Naples native Logan Howard tops field to win 2023 Naples Half Marathon

Image
Mother Nature greeted participants of the 2023 Barron Collier Companies Naples Half Marathon with a brisk 40-degree morning, but a bit of chilly weather wasn’t enough to chill the spirits of over 900 runners from all over the world ready to compete. Naples native Logan Howard took home first place overall Sunday morning, finishing in 1:03:34.39 with a 4:51 pace. Howard, who recently turned 34, is just the second Southwest Florida native to win the half marathon since 2014. “I just started running competitively in the last couple years, and this is a big one,” said Howard, a member of the Gulf Coast Runners Club who won $2,000. “This is a special one. This is a big one for the running community down here. Naples is a beautiful community, it’s a very motivating and inspiring community.” Howard, who expected the weather would be a factor, stuck with the pack until he knew it was time to flip into high gear. After an eighth-place finish in last year...

Dolphins Push Buffalo to the Brink in 34-31 Wild Card Loss

Image
On Buffalo’s opening possession, the Dolphins’ defense produced a crucial fourth-down stop and forced a fumble on quarterback Josh Allen that flung out of bounds on the previous third down snap. However, the Bills scored on their next three offensive drives – including a six-yard receiving touchdown by tight end Dawson Knox and a 12-yard rushing touchdown by running back James Cook. But after allowing 172 yards to the Bills in the first quarter, the Miami defense gave up three points and recorded two interceptions in the second quarter. That helped the Dolphins score 17 points in just over seven minutes to erase a 17-0 deficit. Miami’s first scoring drive began with Thompson’s 20-yard strike to tight end Durham Smythe that put the Dolphins in Buffalo territory for the first time with 12:46 in the second. Facing a daunting third-and-19 at the Bills’ 35, Thompson kept his composure and extended the drive with another 20-yard pass to receiver Tyreek ...

Man faces 8 counts of attempted murder after shooting in Miami’s Liberty City

Detectives accused Hakeem Lanier of shooting at a mother and her children while they were on their way to school earlier this month in Miami. He appeared in Miami-Dade County court on Wednesday. Police officers responded to Northwest 51 Terrace, between 17 and 18 avenues in Miami’s Liberty City after a ShotSpotter detected six shots fired at about 8:20 am, on Jan. 12. The mother told police officers she heard an argument before the gunman started to fire in their direction and she and her children had to run for their lives, according to the arrest report. Witnesses allegedly saw Lanier, 31, standing near a light pole holding a black handgun. Police officers arrested Lanier at about 5 pm, on Tuesday, and questioned him. Lanier told police that he thought his mother was in danger over a conflict between neighbors, he saw a gun, and then heard gunfire, so he fired back, according to the arrest report. Lanier was booked shortly before 1 am, at the Turner Guilford Knig...

St Petersburg bets on affordable housing at the Trop. Can it deliver?

Image
ST. PETERSBURG — Getting developers to build affordable housing is a tough sell. It means making apartments plush enough to lease to doctors and lawyers but renting them for as little as half the going market rate for the next 50 years. That math only works with hard-to-obtain subsidies from local and state government. Even then, most affordable housing projects are at best a piecemeal solution that add some 50 or so homes built on the cheapest land available. Related: St. Petersburg bulldozed a Black community on Trop site. What’s next? With his decision to rip up his predecessor’s plans for the Trop site and prioritize affordable housing for the historic Gas Plant district, St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch is hoping to turn that pattern on his head. Building lower-rent housing on the city’s marquee redevelopment project would honor the predominantly Black neighborhood that was razed to make way for an industrial park that was never built, he said. Event...
