New COVID omicron variant ‘not a cause for panic,’ Biden says

Image
WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden sought to reassure Americans on Monday about the latest COVID-19 variant, describing it as “a cause for concern, not a cause for panic.” Biden did not announce any new travel restrictions or other federal actions during his brief remarks from the White House. Instead, he urged Americans to get a booster shot to increase their immunity against COVID-19 — and to be patient while scientists gather more data on what exactly the new omicron variant will mean. “We have the best vaccine in the world, the best medicines, the best scientists, and we’re learning more every single day,” Biden said. “We’ll fight this variant with scientific and knowledgeable actions and speed, not chaos and confusion.” The White House already  had restricted travel from eight nations, including South Africa, which first identified the new variant, described as omicron. Other countries  also have restricted travel  as cases involving the new variant have been detected...

FSU Foundation fails means testing

Image
Tallahassee has a poverty rate of 27.1%, double the national average, down from 18.2% in 2000. The FSU boosters have no poverty rate. However, the Interstate Blueprint Agency stands ready to vote “yes” to fund the $ 6.5 million transfer of $ 20 million in blueprint funds to FSU Boosters to redesign Doak Campbell Stadium. What is the justification for the FSU Foundation to proclaim $ 957 million worth of assets? Blueprint funds come from everyone in Leon County. Every single purchase we make in Leon County has an additional 1% sales tax approved by our vote. The intention to tax ourselves has been widely portrayed and perceived as improving infrastructure and economic development. We paved our streets, planted trees in the median and saw new bike paths. We saw how parks were created. We know that rainwater runoff and flooding have been mitigated. We have new clinics. We have amazon (s) coming to our little town. But the “trickle down” did not reach the 27.1%. The food ...

For those in southwest Florida looking to avoid a pedestrian accident, there are a few statistics to keep in mind: • Almost half of all pedestrian accidents are in some way related to alcohol – About 47% of pedestrian accidents, on average, are in some way related to alcohol. Either the pedestrian is under the influence of alcohol while walking the streets of Southwest Florida, or the driver of the vehicle was alcoholic before he got behind the wheel. Children With Disabilities Face Special Back-to-School Challenges

Image
Heidi de Marco, Kaiser Health News LOS ANGELES — Christopher Manzo, a boy with curly brown hair and bright-blue-and-yellow glasses, has lived a third of his five years at home because of the pandemic. And he is more than ready for kindergarten. Hand in hand with his mother, Martha Manzo, he walks into the Blind Children’s Center, a low-rise building nestled among apartment complexes in East Hollywood. In the brightly colored hallway, filled with paintings of animals, Manzo kneels to hug Christopher before he scurries unsteadily to his cubby. “God take care of you and be with you,” she says. “And have fun.” Born with congenital hydrocephalus that damaged his brain and left him with severely impaired vision, cognitive difficulties and a lack of coordination, Christopher hasn’t missed only school the past 18 months — he’s missed out on a host of vital occupational, physical and language therapies, as well as socialization with other kids. At home, Christopher couldn’t loo...

Image
The Miami Dolphins will need to do some house cleaning this coming off season. Here are 5 players who may not come back in 2022 No matter how successful the second half of the season was for the Miami Dolphins, the problems in the first eight weeks were glaring. Enough that there is likely to be some house cleaning done in the upcoming off-season. Problems seem to start at the top, so it’s unclear whether GM Chris Grier and head coach Brian Flores will make the decisions this spring. But whatever regime is in place through 2022, they will certainly have their hands full with their upcoming squad decisions. There have been loads of overwhelming cast members for the Dolphins this season, many of whom would make the team smart. Here are five players who are unlikely to be returning to Miami for the next season: Miami Dolphins Eric Rowe (Photo by Mark Brown / Getty Images) Eric Rowe A guy who played a key role in the success of the Miami Dolphins defense last year co...

Where were all the missing Senate Dems during the caucus meeting earlier this week?

Image
Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book was not in attendance Wednesday at a caucus meeting with colleagues. She also was gone when senators debated and voted on special session legislation in the Florida Senate chamber that evening. It’s still not entirely clear why so many Senate Democrats failed to attend a caucus meeting earlier in the day. But Book was marked as “excused” during the special session in the Senate chamber Wednesday evening, according to legislative records, when members voted on key initiatives that Republicans approved related to COVID-19 vaccine and mask mandates. The Phoenix contacted her office multiple times, but has yet to receive a response. In addition, state Sen. Loranne Ausley was excused . She represents several North Florida counties. Members of the Senate caucus met Wednesday before the special session in the Florida Capitol, with only nine members out of 16 in attendance. The situation was troublesome to some lawmakers who were focused on l...

DeSantis signs limits on vaccine mandates one day after Legislature approved them

Image
Gov. Ron DeSantis affixed his signature Thursday to four bills designed to countermand President Joe Biden’s COVID vaccine mandates, one day after the Legislature approved the package during a hastily organized special session. He did so during a raucous press conference at an auto dealership in Brandon — a locale seemingly calculated to needle a president who’s become the target of a popular right-wing cheer: “Let’s go Brandon.” You can read the history of the rude origins of that meme here . “I think Brandon, Fla., is a great American city,” DeSantis said. The crowd cheered and repeated the Brandon chant. “We’re proud to be able to make a stand for freedom in Brandon, Fla.,” the governor said. Meanwhile, Attorney General Ashley Moody — who joined DeSantis for the news conference, along with House Speaker Chris Sprowls, Senate President Wilton Simpson, and sponsors of the legislation at issue — filed a new lawsuit targeting one of Biden’s mandates, the one for health care ...

They grow seasonal and perennial crops like kale, African spinach, tomatoes, and buckwheat to sell in the community’s farmers markets, including the Frenchtown Farmers Market in Tallahassee on Saturdays.
