Dolphins elevate Lamm, Sanders for Sunday versus Packers

Image
The Miami Dolphins announced Saturday afternoon the elevation of offensive tackle Kendall Lamm and wide receiver Braylon Sanders from the team’s practice squad. Both players will be available for the team’s Week 16 game on Sunday when the Dolphins host the Green Bay Packers and will provide depth at positions with injury concerns heading into the week. Miami listed two players as doubtful on Friday’s injury report, offensive tackle Eric Fisher and wide receiver River Cracraft, both with calf injuries. Lamm and Sanders provide insurance should either or both active-roster players not be able to play tomorrow. This marks the second elevation this season for Lamm, who was also available, but did not play, in Week 13 when the Dolphins faced the San Francisco 49ers. Lamm joined the Dolphins at the end of November. He began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent with the Houston Texans, signed out of Appalachian State in 2015. He has also spent time with the Cleveland Browns and

Here’s the aerial view of Southwest Florida nearly 3 months after Hurricane Ian

Image
SANIBEL — At 1,000 feet above the ground, Hurricane Ian’s wake of destruction seems endless. Downed trees are scattered like spilled matchsticks. Abandoned boats lie stranded on land. Blue roofs cover thousands of homes in the region, the product of federal emergency assistance after yet another major hurricane made landfall in low-lying Florida. It has been almost three months since the Category 4 storm brought 150 mph winds and up to 15 feet of storm surge to Southwest Florida. Ian’s official death toll stands at 144 people, with the majority of those deaths occurring here in Lee County. From the windows of a plane, it’s clear a long road to recovery remains. But it’s also clear progress has been made. Nearly three months after Hurricane Ian made landfall in Southwest Florida and wiped out a section of the Sanibel Causeway, the popular roadway has been repaired and access to Sanibel is restored. On Saturday, a steady stream of vehicles traveled toward and away from th

From Tallahassee to Haiti: It’s all about the children

Image
The space between dignity and respect for human rights, and indifference concerning acts of inhumanity can be indiscernible – sometimes a consequence of unwitting lack of awareness. Recognizing that keeping up with what’s happening in our own communities can be difficult, we draw your attention to rampant, almost unimaginable gang-related carnage that’s occurring in Haiti, observe what we can do and why. We’ll take this in reverse order. Whether motivated by altruism or enlightened self-interest, Floridians have cause and opportunity to make a difference despite that an overall solution is elusive. Notably, the Tallahassee community has engaged involving Haiti in meaningful ways over the years, from Florida A&M University, Florida State University and Tallahassee Community College to not-for-profits and businesses, and houses of worship. The late Florida Gov. Lawton Chiles exemplified these sensibilities during the 1990s amid his innovative, multi-pronged and aggressi

Arctic blast brings coldest Christmas in decades

Image
It’s cold, but Christmas in 1983 was still colder. A hard freeze warning is in effect until 9 am Monday for the Big Bend and Panhandle area. It wasn’t quite a white Christmas for Florida, but it’s definitely a chilly one. Temperatures dropped down into the 20s early Sunday morning across northern and central Florida and a hard freeze warning is in effect until 9 am Monday for the Big Bend and Panhandle area. It didn’t break the record for coldest Christmas, although in many areas wind chills may make it feel that way. It’s probably in the top five, behind the Christmas of 1989 and the Christmas cold wave of 1983, which still holds the record for most of the country. Southwest Florida celebrates first Christmas after Ian

Image
Christmas after Ian 02:06 MIAMI – As residents in Fort Myers Beach celebrate the holiday season, there’s no escaping how this year is different. The town was mostly leveled by Hurricane Ian when it made landfall more than three months ago. The storm claimed more than 130 lives and caused billions in damages in the state. Among the dead was Mitch Pacyna- who put together an extravagant holiday display in Fort Myers Beach. Every December, the Chicago native shared online videos of what he and partner Mary created for their adopted town. “They felt the need to make sure that they celebrated it with everybody, and they decorated every year,” said Michelle Schuline, Pacyna’s daughter. The storm wiped out the home where Pacyna and Mary also hosted a huge community potluck on Christmas Eve. The two rode out the storm and Pacyna posted a video showing the storm surge coming in, his final post read, ‘We’re Terrified.’ Somehow, Ma

Black bear spotted close to homes in Naples Manor

Image
NAPLES, Fla. – A large Florida black bear was spotted sifting through garbage cans and getting uncomfortable close to homes in Naples Manor on Wednesday. Residents that recorded live along Catts Street and Georgia Avenue the bear on security cameras and cell phones. “Definitely don’t want to meet up with him, that’s for sure. At least I don’t,” said Robert Howard, who lives along Catts Street. He’s lived here for more than three decades. In that time, he’s never seen a bear on his street, that is, until Wednesday. “Yeah, that’s huge,” Howard said while watching a video of the bear. “No, the closest thing I’ve around here is deer,” added Kenny Law. It’s enough to get his and his neighbor’s attention. “Well, anything bigger than me, I feel like it’s too big,” Law said. The Florida black bear was sifting through trash and was even seen walking by the front porch of a home just a few feet from the front door. That’s a little too close for comfort for some. “What if

Property insurance rates unsustainable for seniors on fixed income

Image
While I’ve been appreciative of the legislature and the governor’s recent attempts to stabilize the property insurance industry in Florida, the simple fact remains that most seniors on fixed incomes are finding the rates unsustainable. Property insurance rates in Florida are widely reported to be two and three times higher than the national average. However, in a North Florida metropolitan area, the rates are even higher. Pensacola zip codes have the highest property insurance rates in the state. Tallahassee is my hometown and has been for decades. But the Pensacola area is where I was raised from a child to adulthood. My mother still lives in a small bayside community that sits between Pensacola and Pensacola Beach. The house my mother lives in is the house we were raised in. Built in the 1950’s, the house is well constructed of pine tongue and groove paneling on the roof and walls; common for that era but too expensive to do today. It has withstood decades of storms wit

Calusa Pines in Naples picked by Golf magazine for Florida’s Top 30

Image
It’s not surprising that Calusa Pines Golf Course in Naples has been named to another prestigious “best courses” list. What is a little surprising is that it’s the only golf course in Southwest Florida to make Golf magazine’s “30 Best Golf Courses in Florida” that was released on Thursday (Dec. 22). But there will be no complaining here. The distinction for Calusa Pines, which is tucked away on a pretty piece of property east of I-75 off Immokalee Road, provides another opportunity to brag about how great Southwest Florida is for golf with many people visiting here, or even retiring here, because of the numerous high-quality public and private golf courses available in Collier and Lee counties. Calusa Pines is a private golf course and as the experts at Golf point out, very unique because it is not tied to a gated community. In other words “pure golf” the magazine editors said in their description, and “quiet rounds are guaranteed.” More impressive is the fact that in Novem
