TALLAHASSEE, Florida (WTXL) – The City of Tallahassee and Florida A&M University commemorate a Tallahassee couple who were instrumental in the local civil rights movement, the late Robert and Trudie Perkins, by naming a street in their honor. Both fought for equal opportunities and treatment for African Americans. Robert Perkins began his activism by working to create recreational facilities for local children. Trudie Perkins ...

What do we owe to each other?

Image
The politicization of coronavirus vaccines and mask-wearing has been a depressing reminder of the downside of American individualism. The successful functioning of a free republic depends on people taking personal responsibility for their actions. Too often now that translates into a disregard for the rights of others, coupled with an insistence that our own opinions, even if they are founded on the shifting sands of rumor, must be given as much respect as any expert’s. In the case of COVID-19, the results have been catastrophic: the loss of hundreds of thousands of American lives, hospital stays for millions more and lingering disability for a number we can’t yet calculate. They are as much victims of the ideology of personal freedom as of the virus itself. Anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers (usually but not always the same people) could choose to stay home so as not to endanger others by their choices, and perhaps some do. But many claim a right to go where they please, be serve...

Pediatricians in southwest Florida beg parents to mask the students

Image
COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. – Pediatricians from the Southwest Florida community joined NCH pediatricians over the weekend begging parents to send their children to school in masks as COVID cases in local pediatric patients hit numbers that doctors still do have never been seen before. According to the NCH, the younger population is 2.5 times more likely to be affected by the delta variant of the coronavirus than older adults. The pediatricians are warning the community about what they will experience early in school and some parents are wondering how to keep their children safe in the classroom. Doctors ask students to dress up when they go back to school. In addition, the doctors strongly recommend that parents have their children vaccinated against COVID from the age of 12. “In the summer months of June we only saw about 10 patients a week with COVID,” said Dr. Pia Myers, Director of the Pediatric Emergency Department at NCH. “At the end of July we sa...

Conservancy of Southwest Florida Calls for Action on Lake Okeechobee Plan | News, sports, jobs

Image
FILE PHOTO nmayberg@breezenewspapers.com The Conservancy of Southwest Florida has published a Call to Action on its website and through Southwest Florida urging concerned citizens to urge the U.S. Army’s Corps of Engineers to integrate “Critical changes to the Lake Okeechobee System Operating Manual (LOSOM) that will help protect the Caloosahatchee communities and the West Coast.” The manual, which has been heavily criticized by local policy leaders and environmental groups for shifting more releases from Lake Okeechobee in Lee County and the Caloosahatchee River, is expected to be released in the next week with potentially new revisions aimed at optimizing the rivers. After that, the chances of making changes based on local contributions diminish, although the plan requires state approvals and is not expected to be passed until next fall. The plan as currently envisaged shifts the burden off the St. Lucie Estuaries. The regulatory plan is being carefully m...

Surgeons Cash In on Stakes in Private Medical Device Companies

Image
Several orthopedic surgeons who invested in Renovis Surgical Technologies made big money when a Japanese technology giant snatched up the small California medical device company. Kyocera Corp., which was eager to expand its U.S. spine and joint implant sales, bought Renovis’ assets in 2019. While the parties kept the sale price under wraps, Renovis’ physician stockholders held stakes valued at over $34 million by the end of that year, with nearly half that sum to company founder and chief executive Dr. John Steinmann, according to the federal government’s “Open Payments” database, which tracks payments to doctors from device and drug companies. Hundreds of orthopedists and neurosurgeons have cashed in on stakes in companies that design, manufacture or distribute orthopedic implants — sometimes after investing little or no money — and despite ongoing ethical and legal concerns, a KHN investigation has found. KHN found that surgeons had stakes in more than 200 privately owned d...

Formula 1 confirms date for the Miami GP in May 2022

Image
Formula 1 has confirmed that the first Miami Grand Prix will be held in early May 2022, claiming that tickets are in high demand even though they haven’t gone on sale yet. Miami will join the F1 schedule for the next season but will be separated from the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, which has a starting slot in late October. While the Miami project encountered some resistance prior to its approval, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali noted that there was a lot of interest in tickets going on sale after the final race date was announced. “We’re not even halfway through 2021, but the plans for 2022 have been going on for some time,” said Domenicali. “The demand for venues for the 2022 calendar is great. We hope to announce the preliminary calendar in September / October. “We can confirm that the eagerly anticipated Miami Grand Prix will take place in the first half of May and that the demand for tickets is high, although sales...

Cape Coral residents prepare for possible floods

Image
CAPE CORAL, Florida – With stagnant water from nightly rains remaining in many neighborhoods of Cape Coral, residents are preparing for a potential tropical system that could flood roads and strand motorists. Scott Nally’s house on SW 16th Terrace is high enough to avoid the floods from Elsa, but just barely. “It came halfway down my driveway, my neighbors, the whole street was flooded,” said Nally. Just a month ago, his entire street was flooded with water, making getting in and out a challenge. Even now you can see stagnant water from recent rains. “Always worried, especially because I have a lot of older neighbors who are difficult to move around even on good roads.” Nally added. Cape Coral residents are preparing for another tropical storm. The city government is preparing by cleaning rain gutters and weirs from Thursday. City officials also said that when the city’s streets flood because of the rain, floods tend to recede qu...

Public Favors Masks in Classrooms but Balks at Mandating Vaccinations for Students

Image
As the spread of the delta variant threatens the safety of classrooms, a poll released Wednesday found nearly two-thirds of parents support schools’ requiring unvaccinated students age 5 or older and teachers to wear masks. A majority of parents, however, oppose requiring students now eligible for a covid vaccine to get one, with one Black parent from Michigan telling pollsters that “my child is not a test dummy.” The strong public opinions come as the politics over classroom masking grows more heated with the start of the school year, particularly in Florida and Texas . Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has issued an executive order giving parents the authority to decide whether their kids should be masked but several large school districts are maintaining their masking mandates. The Dallas and Austin school districts are also defying a ban on mask mandates issued by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican. The KFF covid-19 poll found that, nationally, 63% of parents favore...

U.S. Senate to try again on voting rights in September, following summer recess

Image
WASHINGTON — U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is planning to bring a comprehensive voting rights package to the Senate floor for a vote when the chamber returns from recess next month. Schumer, a New York Democrat, said Wednesday that the Senate will take up a compromise version of the voting and elections bill, S.1 , known as “For the People Act,” as the first piece of legislation in September’s session. Schumer’s remarks came after Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas blocked an attempt by Schumer early Wednesday to advance the “For the People Act” for Senate debate, after the Senate in a marathon session had passed the fiscal 2022 budget resolution on a 50-49 vote . Schumer had asked for what’s known as “unanimous consent” to move ahead on debate on the bill, but Cruz objected, saying that “this bill would constitute a federal government takeover of elections” and a “massive power grab” by Democrats. Schumer said Democrats must keep trying to pass the elections ove...

Tropical Storm Fred Forms; Southwest Florida in the cone

Image
WINK NEWS Tropical storm Fred formed south of Puerto Rico. At 11:00 PM on Tuesday, Fred has winds of 40 mph and is moving into the WNW at 27 mph. Fred will move west-northwest through the NE Caribbean. From Thursday to Friday it will happen north of Cuba and into the southern Bahamas. By this weekend, Fred is expected to pass south of Florida through the Straits and Keys, or possibly even land in South Florida as Tropical Storm Fred. Then the greatest potential impact is possible here in southwest Florida. The good news is that before Fred can potentially hit the SWFL, he will have to overcome many obstacles, including the potential disruption caused by the mountainous terrain of Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, and Cuba, along with a dose of dry air and wind shear. However, if Fred manages to pass north of the islands and bypass the mountainous terrain, we could see a stronger storm than currently forecast considering the water temperatures are very warm, espe...
